He certainly had his flaws and scandals. Very few politicians don't. And as a DC outsider you would only remember that about him. But he started the summer job program for the poor and working class kids over 30 years ago. And that was huge for DC residents.

I think that is admirable of him. I am sad that he tarnished his political career by becoming a drug addict.
Here's some red meat. The flamboyant former mayor of Washington DC has died. Some will remember him for his arrest and jail term in the 90s. Others how he used his office to further his pursuit of women. Hopefully someone has something good to say of him.
for all his faults he was still a human being, and enough people thought well enough of him to elect him to office after a criminal conviction. may he find in death, the peace he sought in life.
The irony is that among DC voters, Barry could have done drugs, smacked his wife around, used hookers, mugged people......but if he'd been shown being gay.....he'd never have been re-elected.
DC is ground zero for selective bigotry.
To paraphrase Edwin Edwards, he'd only get defeated if he was found with a dead girl or live boy.
Barry in his later years spoke at rallies against same sex marriage, and claimed that legalizing same sex marriage would start a civil war.
