All federal employees who worked but saw their paychecks delayed during the 2013 government shut down may join in a lawsuit alleging a violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

A U.S. Court of Federal Appeals has decided that all workers deemed "essential" - those who worked but saw their paychecks delayed during the shutdown - can join in the multi-million dollar lawsuit, Federal Times reported.

Federal workers are heroes.

They do the work of the nation.

America would fall apart if not for them.

They get paid less than private sector workers.

(These are the posts that you will likely see in response to criticizing federal workers)

They are a parasite of the nation.

America would benefit without them.

They get massively overpaid compared to the private sector worker.

(These are posts that you will likely see in response to supporting federal workers)

I think somewhere in between these two points of response is the more accurate picture but ideology restricts debaters from taking that holistic view and debating in anything other than binary terms. Your either a zero or one.

You are right. There are tons of shades of grey, and even differences in what people view as "federal workers." The term is thrown around to describe elected officials, staffers, civil servants, all kinds of people. Some are overpaid. Some are underpaid. Some work hard. Some do not. Some are more necessary than others. Some are an expense which is worthy of the nation. Some are not.

The problem is, detailed analysis would be required on a job by job basis and such analysis is inconvenient for sound bite politics and posturing.
