Entire Detroit Public Lighting system is down

Just think of what a dedicated groups of terrorists could do to the power grid with a few tons of readily available home-made explosives!
The worst part of it is, I really don't see any way our government can protect the grid, or substations or power plants from such an attack! NONE of the system was built with the need for defense in mind!
Perhaps it is time for those Federal agencies that are supposed to be overseeing the system to look at the defense needs of the infrastructure.

I worry China,Russia or N.Korea could hack into our grid with all that G.E. technology that our enemies already stole .
They have stolen intellectual property, personal info,US companies secrets maybe this is a dry run then vengeance will be revealed ...

Detroit is in ruins.

The system isn't vulnerable. Detroit is vulnerable.

Quote:
"DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital informed patients, families, clinical staff and non-clinical employees that it had experienced two power outages caused by outdated public lighting department equipment," spokeswoman Sarah Collica said.

The system is highly vulnerable.

It's old and decrepit. It's been in need of a rebuild for decades. That whole grid is dangerously outdated. That's why that whole damn region blacked out about a decade ago.

Cable failure knocks out power to downtown Detroit

That sounds like a nightmare.

You want armed guards patrolling at every substation and along every power line in America?

Boy do I remember that day, which BTW that black out started here in Ohio. The funny thing is where I live in northeast Ohio was NOT effected.

I was also in Ohio and Michigan that week visiting family. What a nightmare that was.

You're right...it was spotty. You could go a few miles over from a blackout area and they'd have full power.

And during the hottest part of the summer too.

Yes, and we didn't have much of a summer up until that point. The day it happened was the hottest day of the year I believe. At any rate, I remember having to DJ that night. It was a Thursday which was one of our busiest nights at the place I worked at. Not that night. They had a generator running, but they turned off the AC, and so it was like a sauna in there.

If that is the best that those who have the authority can do, YES!
I don't have all the answers, and I don't have the authority to put protections in place. I am simply aware that SOMETHING needs to be done!
I can get by for quite a while without power from the grid. Can you?
I have two generators, one free standing, and one in the RV. As long as I can get fuel, I am good.
There are a LOT of people in this world dedicated to taking the United States down.
I don't think we can afford to be complacent about ANYTHING!
If our security requires that we take homeless people off the streets, give them 3 weeks of firearms training, an ATV with a trailer, 30 days worth of MREs, a tent and sleeping bag, a GPS, and show them where to patrol, so be it!
Can we afford to NOT do it?
