For lunch at school I'd have something like two deep-fried Chick-fil-A sandwiches, 2 servings of deep-fried french fries, a milk, and one packet of Hostess Dunkin Sticks. Then in the afternoon I'd buy a snack - another packet of Hostess Dunkin Sticks and a coke.
And you would have been starving on what they are serving now.

I remember what some of the boys could put down, regular sized boys, not fat kids. It would be mean to serve them these skimpy meals of bad tasting food and not allow them to have anything else.

I usually brought my lunch, a sandwich of some type with some veggies and a snack and dessert. I didn't eat much for lunch but some kids skipped it altogether. At some point it became uncool for some kids to eat lunch at lunch time and they would just snack all day. Fridays was pizza day, that was pretty popular. Pizza and Mountain Dew and Snickers and no obese kids. Not one.

Why? A Chick-fil-a sandwich, fries and a milk is 854 calories. The kids in that cafeteria today can still get an 850 calorie lunch - it's just a healthier 850 calories.

Once I turned 16, I didn't eat at school that often. I'd usually go home and eat leftovers or my dad would make me lunch. But when I did eat at school (middle and high), I ate pure junk-food. I think it's a great thing they've gotten that garbage out of schools.

Students slam Michelle O with photos of skimpy school lunches - EAGnews.org

I'm not on Twitter so I can't check there and I don't have kids to send me a photo from their phones but there are a few photos at the link above. I see future Republican/Libertarian voters in my crystal ball...

Oh wait, here's a link to more of the photos:

I don't get it? Besides the first photo, most of the portions looked fine to me. Probably more than I ate at lunch in HS. And this statement is coming from one of the rare 30% in our country who is NOT overweight!

How much did the haters eat at lunch in HS? Statistically speaking, 70% of you are overweight......

Right? My food in school was gross and unappealing too. It was just even worse for you than what these kids are getting.

I hope our next first lady (or gentleman) will attempt to lessen the stigma of mental illness.

You'll find it's the larger bureaucrat administrated school systems like LA, NY, Detroit who serves garbage (but theoretically healthy) lunches.

I grew up in a small unincorporated area of Los Angeles that served fine lunches. My H.S. had/has a serve yourselve lunch bar where you could choose from sandwiches, pizza, burritos, veggies, and deserts, including carrot cake and jello. It wasn't a free lunch but then when is anything that is centrally planned, and free, good; or even free?

I still crave peanut butter confections, a desert on my elementary school menu several times a month.

How old are you? Through my thirties I was 10-14% body fat, an avid surfer, motox, skater, skiier...etc and my business was construction so I was constantly lifting and moving.

Wait until you are in your fifties/sixties and then judge others.

The BIGGEST producer of obesity isn't the food, it's the lack of exercise. Thank technology for this epidemic.

The entire premise of this thread is "judgement" and yet you pick *my* post to make a point? Sorry if I hit a nerve but the truth is that Americans are fat.

Yes, lack of a activities is a problem but so is *excess consumption of calories! * We can't just ignore that merely for the sake of being politically correct.

And since these lunch portions are on par with what millenials, boomers and Gen X had for lunch and we were more active, maybe we should consider serving even less...

It's really a combo of both, lack of exercise & too much calorie consumption not in par with the amount of physical activity a person engages in.

There was a PBS docureality show called "Frontier House" that I loved. About 4 families that set up & had to maintain a homestead for 4 months so essentially, these people were living like they were back in the 1800's. I totally would love to do that. Anyway, one of the families was an annoying lot who was always trying to cheat the system or rules for the show. The had to bring in a nutritionist that the producers had assigned because they were complaining about how much weight they had lost & that they needed more food. Constantly complaining they didn't have food & they were seriously worried about their health. The nutritionist told them their portions were completely fine & in accordance with what they ate back in the day & for the amount of physical activity they were doing each day, which was a lot. Essentially, they were told that they're so used to having so much food that when that amount is downgraded to an actual normal amount, they felt that they were being starved which was totally far from the truth & was actually in step with what should be considered healthy.
