"President Barack Obama commuted the sentences of eight federal drug defendants on Wednesday, including four who were set to die in federal prison, as part of a new initiative to reduce harsh sentences for nonviolent crimes.
Deputy Attorney General James Cole said in a statement that the eight people granted clemency on Wednesday were "sentenced under outdated and unfair laws" and that all of them met the criteria of the clemency initiative that was announced back in April."
The program aims to decrease lengthy sentences for non-violent drug offenders and shrink the country's surging prison population. All of these prisoners are low level offenders with no ties to gang or organized crime, and all have served at least 10 years behind bars.
It's a start.

Ron Paul wins again. No way the Democrats could make Hillary stand on the stage next to Rand Paul, with the Republican being the guy who wanted to legalize marijuana and set non violent drug offenders free. Nice to see the Democrats coming around on this issue. Hopefully this will also force them to denounce needless wars, Foreign Aid, NSA spying, the Patriot Act, the militarization of the police force et al.
Non violent drug offenders are violent drug offenders whose crimes were plea bargained. they are non violent only in the game of legalese scrable, their behavior VIOLENT.
Obama should end the drug war. No kudos for releasing a few offenders for publicity.
