To erase the state debt, the Gov. has been toying with the idea of raising the sales tax a percent. I agree with him. Lets tax the crap out of everyone - the sales tax does just that without discrimination. What sayeth ye?
(PS I just love taxes, thats why I live in RI)

Default Here's what I think....

Well, if raising the sales tax a percent or two solves all the state's fiscal problems, maybe it's a good idea. Nobody's gonna notice much difference with that small of an increase. At some point though, you hit up against the fact that if sales taxes are too high people are gonna quit buying stuff or just buy less stuff, in either case that's not the recipe for a healthy growing economy.

How about this, first off, totally dump the income tax system. The current system is like medieval feudalism but only two feudal barons, i.e. the federal and state gov'ts. If you wanna stay out of jail, you gotta pay them some money out of every dollar you earn for yourself. That is worse than Soviet communism and totally violates the U.S. Constitution. The present requirement to file a personal tax statement also violates the 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination, which by the way is written in very clear and plain english. US citizens may not be compelled to produce information which could incriminate themselves.

I think the Feds and states should confiscate the hard assets of the wealthy to pay all the bills. Just size all the land, boats, BMW's, mutual funds, etc. of anyone who makes more than $3 million dollars per year. Nobody needs to make more than $3 million dollars per year.

Also, if they are gonna tax individuals, they should increase taxes on parents who have children. The more children, the higher the taxes. This would help keep the population levels reasonable and make all these crazy Mormon and latino "breeders" out there pay their own way.

Of course we'll never see utilitarian common sense solutions like these come into being in this wacko country.

When State Sales taxes started they were just 2%, now they are close to 10% if you add City taxes in some locations. They just discourage spending and hurt the economy. They are just another hidden inflation.

I think we should just hand over our paycheck to the government, and let them decide how much allowance we should receive each month.

That's the Hillary plan. Turn it all over to mommy, and she'll give you a present. Maybe she'll let you go to the village once in a while to see how your children are being raised.

Here in TX we don't have an income tax, so I don't mind the sales tax at all. It's 8.75% where I live, which is higher than 5% where I used to live... but my consumption of products dictates my mandatory donation to the state. Here there's no tax on unprepared food or medicine, so it helps lessen the burden on people with lower income.

Tell the Gov. to fire some of those useless state employees (all states have them) and save some money that way and ask him where he spent so much of your money in the first place...

I assume the OP is kidding, but in case he is not (I've talked to people who actually want higher taxes)

I don't understand why people want to give more of THEIR money to the government.
It's your money, you should know how best to use it, not the government. Are you too dumb to know how best to spend your own money so you need the government to spend it for you on programs?

I agree with Yeledaf, why don't we just give our paychecks to the government and let them tell us how they think we should spend it... it's ridiculous. "Let's tax the crap our of everyone" -- are you insane? What kind of mentality is that? Why would you want to be taxed more?

God help us.
