It hasn't been proven N Korea is behind the hack attacks.
Obama just got done saying sanctions were ineffective when he lifted Cuba's, so why all of the sudden will they work on N Korea? (or Russia for that matter)
One answer is the US. Fedguv is highly dysfunctional and incompetent and will likely use the Sony incident to intrude further into our lives under the guise of "security". Fear mongering, Patriot act anyone?
The internet security of Sony is Sonys problem, just as it is for you and I.
Cuba doesn't have a large military or the ability to project force. Cuba and Russia/Iran/NK aren't an apples to apples comparison. You really should leave the geopolitical topics to the folks who understand it.
In the global economy, where allies and enemies exist, sanctions no longer work.
The USA and Britain are no longer the holder of the keys.
Of course sanctions work, it's not a one-size fits all strategy though. Russia and Iran have been economically depressed from our sanctions then got hit with low oil prices which has major ramifications. For example, how long will the Russia Ruble be solvent? People are panicking and selling their Rubles.
From a policy perspective, it certainly begs the question of how much funds should we be allocating for conventional warfare compared to the unconventional (cyber security and offensive capabilities). The 21st century is a digital one.
The entire hacker thing was a ruse to impose sanctions in an attempt at regime change. The problem is, the next regime will probably be worse than the one there now.
The current one is simply inept. That isn't a bad thing.
Yes, the same thing occurred to me. Excuse to sanction.
Hope they have some very hard evidence that it was NK.
I doubt if North Korea had anything to do with hacking SONY. I think the claims by our government are just an excuse to throw our economic weight around. Our shadow government does not need facts just self created excuses (WMD's anyone). North Korea is a bad joke that will collapse on their own in the next couple of generations. We do not need to bother.
IMHO - Frightened people are selling rubles. Smart and patient people are buying them. In the next couple of decades Russia is far likelier to survive low oil prices than our credit driven overspending economy.
I am not convinced that NK was behind the hack. There are plenty of experts that believe that.
The hack was against Sony, not "the United States." So it is simply false to say that the country is defenseless against another country. Sony has already been exposed as having seriously deficient internal practices toward IT security.
In a more general sense, I think much of the world's information technology is vulnerable to hackers. We see this time and time again.
Sanctions against NK probably will do little against a country accustomed to severe life. NK has secret friends in the world that help it stay running.
The world is laughing at Obama again for this silly nonsense.
