A Saudi Arabian blogger has been publicly flogged after being convicted of cybercrime and insulting Islam, reports say.

Raif Badawi, who was sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in jail, was flogged 50 times. The flogging will be carried out weekly, campaigners say.

Mr Badawi, the co-founder of a now banned website called the Liberal Saudi Network, was arrested in 2012.

Rights groups condemned his conviction and the US appealed for clemency.

It seems the laws in Saudi Arabia are similar to the ISIS. Yet the Western world does little to condemn Saudi Arabia. However according to the Western Governments, Saddam of Iraq is worse, even though Iraq was one of the most secular places in the Middle East and religious minorities were much better protected than in Saudi Arabia.

They just are not called out on it because they have money. Islamic states are basically still in the dark ages.

Bin Laden was Saudi. The hijackers on 911 were Saudis. The CIA reported at the height of the Iraq war that there were more Saudi "insurgent" fighters in Iraq than all other nations combined. Much of ISIS is believed to be Saudi. Al Queda in Syria admitted it was they, not Assad that gassed people and it was with Saudi supplied nerve gas. Saudi Arabia uses Sharia Law as it's official legal system. They publicy stone women to death. The Govt officially beheaded 59 people in 2014. The Saudis are our #1 ally in Muslim world. Why?

Meanwhile not so long ago a woman was executed there for witchcraft.

The US government is silent regarding the death penality for homosexuals that are caught in the act in Saudi Arabia but is critical of the Russian government treatment of gays even though Russia law does not forbid homosexual acts. Yet it does not allow homosexuality to be taught in schools. State Dept. Criticizes Russians--Not Saudis--on Gay Rights | CNS News

The floggings one receives in the Middle East are meant to sting more than anything else. Look up the videos online and all of them are cloths on and by the time its over the clothing shows no marks on it. Their country, their law.

What they do doesn't even come close to what Europeans and Americans did in the past. For that either rent a copy of Roots or watch and listen to the following video:

That's a shame.

(Sigh) Yep, don't that just suck , though.. The Saudis have AL of our top shelf military hardware, we pander to them like they are just oh so special, Hell, our President even bows to their king. More cheddar flows to radical Islam from Saudi Arabia than anywhere else in the ME, even Iran.

Back in the 70s, when they pulled the embargo, we should have shut off their food, and let them eat their oil and cash. Can't do that now, our food exports ain't what they used to be. Our "alliance" with them is the sickest joke of all. The , blatant, greed is wholly nauseating..

That was over 150 years ago in regards to America and the West. This is the 21st century. Not all of the people are clothed regarding being wipped. Here is an article of of an British person being wipped after being accused of drinking alcohol in Quatar in the 1980s. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-496844/My-felt-like-As-British-teacher-faces-40-lashes-man-speaks-out.html

Did you know until the 1960s Saudi Arabia still legalised slavery and that was over 100 years after the entire America abolished it?

Did you know children are also flogged in Saudi Arabia?

Flogging is commonly employed in the country on both men and women - and even children in some cases. A thick bamboo cane is used and often the victim is tied up so they cannot run away. Although rarely fatal, flogging can leave lifelong scars - both physical and psychological.Saudi Man Gets 450 Lashes and 3 Years Jail after Posting 'Gay Tweets'

If we go back to the article:

BBC News - Saudi blogger Badawi 'flogged for Islam insult'

His sentence was:
Quote:
Raif Badawi, who was sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in jail, was flogged 50 times. The flogging will be carried out weekly,...
So with being lashed 50 times:

Quote:
He was then made to stand with his back to onlookers and whipped, though he remained silent, the witnesses said.
Does anyone really think he was hit that hard that he able to simply stand there?

If one needs to bring up punishments, then lets bring by Caning in East Asia where it DOES rip open the skin before one even gets the 5th strike. Yet the US does Billions of dollars of business with those countries and yet there isn't even one thread that gets started.
