I don't see any country doing this because nobody wins.

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev is warning that if the Ukraine crisis transforms into World War 3, then it may be unavoidable that Vladimir Putin may launch a Russian nuclear war.

In a related report by the Inquisitr, when the U.S. Congress passed the Ukraine Freedom Support Act, it authorized President Obama to give Ukraine lethal aid and military support. Based upon the date of the signing of the law, the Obama administration has until February 16, 2015 to provide details for how this military action will be enacted.

Putin knows that Obama isn't going to do anything of any real consequence. He isn't going to launch anything. He will meerly continue to rub Obamas nose in his failures on the world stage.

In the late 1980s a fellow named Chris Crawford created a computer game called "Balance of Power". It simulated foreign policy for either the USA or Soviet Union and the scoring was on the basis of national prestege and related to national success in making as many nations like you. The world was divided up into spheres of influence and nations not aligned to either bloc. One could use military force, subversion, foreign aid to influence other nations but any action could trigger a diplomatic crisis leading to threats and leading up to putting forces on nuclear alert and pressing the red button. At which point the screen went blank and a message saying no one won this particular game. The way to win the game which spanned the years 1980 to 1999 was to (1) survive and (2) have more popularity than the opponent which could be the computer for you could chose to play the US or Soviet side.

The value of this game was it provided a good schooling in how to handle foreign policy and it taught lessons like you don't mess with nations in either power blocs sphere of influence. If you are playing the Soviet side you don't send the Red Army to Nicaragua or invade South Korea and when playing the USA side you don't send military aid to rebels in Poland or invade North Korea, that is unless you want to end the game quickly!

Balance of Power illustrates the limits of power and why the Ukaraine which has been in the Russian sphere of influence for the last thousand years. Might trigger a nasty response from Moscow if we start messing around with it..

Gorby just want a little bit attention, like in the days of old. Nobody loves Gorby in Russia because he pulled USSR down, his is a pariah. All forgot about him, "sic transit gloria mundi". I'm from Russia, I don't fight with US, I don't fight with you. However filthy politicians will try to raise enemy image.

I believe the US is going to deploy the ABM system in Europe. Russia is working on one in the S-500 system capable of taking down objects in LEO at a minimum. The problem with this is it defeats MAD (mutual assured destruction) which brought some sort of sanity to the insanity of the arms race.

The west has a problem. The people making the choices for us care nothing for consequences as they have never been and never will be held accountable. This gives rise to a kind of arrogance and foolishness. When you're untouchable it can go to your head. Our leaders are scary folk. 20 years ago we had a choice, we could have ended this with Russia. We chose another path, that of further conflict. Solutions to things like this are not their interests. This whole idea of nuclear war is insane yet there are minds in power that think it is an option.

There's a book written long ago called the Nuclear Reader. It goes into this subject deeply in all aspects. I think it's pretty accurate. Yeah we could bomb Russia back into the stone age but we would certainly be no better off in the end. We have larger cities with denser populations. Our infrastructure is nicely and neatly organized, and very vulnerable. A 30 megaton nuke detonating over Manhattan would vaporize the island, the Jersey shore would burn for miles and further inland anyone caught outside would be badly injured. Millions would die in minutes and they'd be the lucky ones.

Just remember if we ever get some nutjob like McCain in the presidents chair and some day you see a bright light, run towards it.
