Here's the problem with those who say "just don't act up and you'll be fine" What if the corruption of this gets so out of hand that our lawmakers (who are bought out by these mega corporations who run the prisions) Decide to have it so things like minor speeding or jaywalking will result in prison time? It may sound far fetched but the trend would support the idea.
No doubt that after 239 years the US has evolved into a slave state. We are by far the world leader in incarceration, and even those who manage to evade imprisonment pay about 40-50% of their earnings to the gov't. So they are not full slaves, but just half slaves.
Oh give me a f**king break. Really? This is insulting to actual slaves. Slaves were slaves against their will. You may think prisoners are where they are at against their will but they committed a crime to be locked up! Slaves were innocent, every inmate in America (excluding the few who are wrongly convicted) is there because they committed a felony willing and in accordance with their will.
Perhaps, but those prisoners should not be competing against the private sector. There have been small businesses put out to pasture because of prison workers. Its ugly.

There are more black men imprisoned today than there were ever slaves in this country.
And it's not just a racial thing; The USA now has the largest prison population in the history of the civilized World.
Not only do nationless corporations benefit from the slave labor, but they now run the prisons and earn profits from incarcerating people-they also lobby Congress for stricter laws and longer mandatory sentencing.
What do they care? They are nationless corporations and have allegience to no nation.
We are 5% of the World's population yet hold 25% of the World's prisoners.
Just wanted to say the bold is not true at all.
There were millions of slaves in this this country. There is less than one million black men in prison on any given day, usually about 800-900K total.
That statement is VERY misleading and is one that leads to stereotypes regarding black men being some sort of super criminal and jailed at crazy, outlandish rates. The vast majority of black men have never been to prison and won't go to prison at all.
That said, I do feel that many people in prison are used for slave labor and that historically the criminal justice system has been and is still used as a way for individuals, governments, and corporations to get cheap or free labor.
The abolition of slavery quickly gave rise to the Black Codes and Convict Leasing, which together worked wonders at perpetuating African American servitude by exploiting a loophole in the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, which reads: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”
2.2 Million prisoners, and not only do we pay up to $45k per prisoner per year from taxes, but corprations are legally exploiting these prisoners as slave labor, with some being paid as little as .07 an hour.
Prisoners need to be made to work. no free ride because you committed a crime.
Bring the chain gangs back.
