If you get your panties in a bunch over the words people that you don't know and don't care about use to describe you, I weep for you. On second thought, no I don't...I just know that you're not very intelligent.
Is there someone out there calling me honky, cracka, whitey, white devil, round eye, whatever? Undoubtedly. Am I going to protest and lose sleep and cry and ask for legislation to be passed? Um...seriously?
Actually I tell you my favorite racial slur I've been called is Round Eye by an asian man. When I first heard that slur I almost pi$$ed myself I laughed to hard.
LOL!!! Never heard that one before. I guess to him there's two kinds of people in the world - Slanty Eyes and Round Eyes. I'm a Round Eye too!
Best way for any group to fight racism is to succeed! Then they can call you anything they want and you can just grin back at them. Most racial prejudice I have witnessed stemmed from ignorance which causes fear and jealousy and leads to conflict.
Hmmm. Interesting.
40 years ago, the term "Negro," often pronounced "Nigra" here in Alabama, was considered the most inoffensive and respectful term, with "colored" almost as respectful. Then the term "Black" was introduced.
Shows how things change.
Personally, I hate the term "cracker." This originally meant a rural white person from Georgia, and nowhere else. I was very offended to be called a "cracker," not because I'm white, but because I'm NOT from Georgia!
Yes Southlander things have changed. I didn't grow up back then so I have never been called colored or a negro. If I was, I think I would look at that person like they were crazy...same thing I would expect if I called a white person a cracker or whitey or whatever. I have never used a racial slur towards anyone because I wouldn't want that to happen to me and I think that goes for many people I know in my age bracket.
Hmmm. Interesting.

Wrong Southlander, you history revisionist, i tell you. Anyway the original word Cracker comes from England, Scotland, and Ireland. It was a term to reference crackers living in the most rural parts of those areas. The crackers eventually left those areas and started to populate the south in the 1600's and 1700's. Perhaps they heavily populated Georgia, i'm not sure, but what you described has little or nothing to do with where the original word came from.

Well folks finally a bigot has entered the board. Dude, do not come here we were having an orderly conversation. Go else where there are plenty of racist forums on here to spew your hate and silliness do it in those forums. The forum was started by a white wanting to get clarity on the use of non offensive words. Your point is moot and silly. This forum has nothing to do with blacks whinning about a word. Where do they find these creeps?
Hmmm. Interesting.

Ummm sorry to say 40 years ago blacks had no say. Nigra and colored were offensive in Alabama but blacks weren't able to tell you what they really felt. Sounds like the old saying our blacks had no problems until the media or whoever came to our town to get them upset. I don't suppose the bombings in Alabama were respectful and inoffensive.
I have not been able to post today and won't be able to until tomorrow afternoon, but -- please don't feel that I am disinterested. I am saving up my comments for when I have time.
So far, so good -- interesting, civil (for the most part), and thoughtful.

When I was in Alabama Blacks were called a number of terms that I would consider disrespectful, hateful and downright demeaning...and you are correct in saying they had no say 40 years ago. Hopefully all that has changed and we all think of ourselves as Americans first and foremost.
Personally I would like to see terms like Black American, White American, Italian American (etc. etc.) disappear as we all know where we came from.
The best way to find out how to refer tio folks is to include them in one's circle of friends and listen closely to them in conversation. Pretty soon you will be able to pick up on it -- or you will be lightly corrected without anyone feeling embarrassed or insulted.
