I have no issue with having a day for Dr. King. I just wish they would give him his own day and not put it on a day that many states already had a state holiday. As some of you may know, today is Robert E. Lee's actual birthday and in many states it is still a state holiday today.
Isn't it mostly another reason to focus on MLK, Rosa Parks, civil rights and slavery? I pulled up a site about black history month just out of curiosity, and the first article is about Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in major league baseball. There must be famous people in black history that did things that weren't related to civil rights... no? Wouldn't it be good for black kids to hear about them?

"On June 10th, 1964, Everett Dirksen (R-IL), the Republican Leader in the U.S. Senate, condemned the Democrats’ 57-day filibuster against the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Leading the Democrats in their opposition to civil rights for African-Americans was Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV). Byrd, who got into politics as a recruiter for the Ku Klux Klan, spoke against the bill for fourteen straight hours. Democrats still call Robert Byrd “the conscience of the Senate.”
Here's a breakdown by party on how they voted on The Civil Rights Act of 1964.......
House of Representatives:
Democrats for: 152
Democrats against: 96
Republicans for: 138
Republicans against: 34
This. The truth stings but its still the truth.I will be celebrating Robert E. Lee's bday probably later...
As will most right-wing bigots and phony patriots from the Deep South.

Maybe I should have plagiarized my dissertation like MLK did, then I'd have a holiday.
Celebrating Frederick Douglass Day instead....

The Civil Rights era is still a sore spot for most social conservatives, as you can see. It's not easy seeing your ideology, built on the purest of hate, suffer a defeat like that.

Mad because someone dares question a god of diversity.
At the end of the day, who Martin was on his down time and his plagiarism is irrelevant. What he stood for and the civil rights movement determines his legacy. Those playing up his character flaws are those who would have been holding "segregation forever" signs and burning blacks for not getting off the sidewalk in time in those days.
