Before there was measles vaccine, kids just had to suffer through it. Keep in mind there is more than one disease called measles. My three siblings and I suffered both versions, what we called red measles, which is the one that makes you really sick, and german measles, which is no fun, but not as bad as the red measles.
My two sisters and I recovered just fine. My brother - didn't. He has had life-long physical and developmental problems, and, no matter how hard he has tried (and he has tried very hard), has never been able to hold down a job for long, in spite of being highly intelligent.
All the kids in my neighborhood had the measles when I was a kid....One dies and two suffered permanent damage.
Five children have died in a measles outbreak here in the last 10 days, all of them from families that belong to two fundamentalist churches that preach a reliance on prayer, not medical care, to cure disease.Measles and Faith Combine In 5 Deaths in Philadelphia - NYTimes.com
Does anyone in here know anyone whose family member had contacted measles?
If so, what state
What nationality
boy or girl
When I was a kid, practically all of us came down with the measles. And back in those days it was seen as one of the normal passages of childhood. Never knew of anyone having serious complications, although they no doubt did occur.
Nearly all of us kids had measles when we were growing up. It wasn't considered remarkable.
Lucky me, I had them several times - a couple of cases of German measles and then the red measles and after that I was immune. I only know of one case of complications and that is my cousin's daughter who was born hard of hearing because her mother had measles while she was carrying her.
I know kids who have contracted measles. Last case I saw was several years ago. So now that I am telling you this do you now believe me, a random internet stranger?
I do agree that this current outbreak is being played up by the media, just like they did with ebola. It does however show the public that these diseases are very real and closer to home than you think.
Difference with Ebola, though, is while the media was hyping it, doctors were trying to explain why it would not become an epidemic since it is not easy to catch. Doctors are sounding the alarm with the upswing of measles because it is VERY contagious. And while healthy kids have a good chance of getting through it just fine, babies (too young for vaccination), kids with health issues, and adults are in danger.

German Measles is Rubella (part of the MMR vaccine), not the same as Measles. That one was extremely dangerous for pregnant women and their babies. Yes, hard of hearing or deafness for offspring was one of the problems. When I was around 9 I was I had an appendectomy and was in a hospital room with another little girl who was on her 4th or 5th surgery due to having been exposed to rubella as a fetus. She was deaf, but I recall her surgery she was going through while we were rooming together had something to do with her kidneys.
