Singapore may lack labor, but drones will perform functions humans now do, in the future.

There's a reason why Walmart overtook IBM as the largest employer in the 80's. McDonalds pushed IBM to third place and YuM Brands ( Taco Bell) pushed IBM to # 4 where it has remained.

You are gravely mistaken if you think automation is just going to hit low paying minimum wage jobs. Even jobs that require high levels of intelligence and education are going to get slammed by automation. It's already happening to a field like pharmacy. Medco's automated prescription filling machine has already filled 500 million orders:

Medco's Willingboro Automated Pharmacy: 500 Million Prescriptions and Counting -- WILLINGBORO, N.J., April 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --

Half of all hospitals in major cities now have an automated pharmacy dispensing machine. The only thing that's keeping jobs for pharmacists is the fact that the law requires that a pharmacist be on staff wherever prescription meds are being dispensed--in other words it isn't the skills and knowledge of a pharmacist that is keeping them employed, its only the fact that they're good at lobbying lawmakers so far. It's only a matter of time until hospitals start pushing hard to remove pharmacists all together with machines now filling orders with 99.9% accuracy.

Even surgeons will become unemployed in the future once robotics starts taking over and hospitals need less surgeons. Why hire a human that is prone to errors and getting tired if a machine will do the same surgery, do it better, provide faster recovery time, and need no salary? The general public has no idea how cutting edge the latest machine vision and learning is, surgeons will absolutely lose their jobs to automation in the future as well. Every job is going to become automated, we should start getting used to permanent unemployment or 10-20 hour work weeks.

that was before the days of AI, just wait until machines can start writing their own code in intelligent ways.

Applebee's used a drone to take photos around the holidays, worked well till a woman was startled, hit it and lost part of her nose. I'd rather pay my wait staff more than the 2.15 an hour that they get here then lose part of my face.

Hah-good point. Drones also have a negative connotation that will be hard to overcome.

Using drones to kill innocent women and children in Pakistan and other countries isn't exactly helping it's image.

I don't want a drone serving me. I like looking at cute waitresses.

Cyrus McCormick put thousands of laborers out of work with his reaper. The grain was then transported to an elevator, the invention of which put many more thousands of laborers out of work. We did just fine, and we'll continue to do so.

I'm not ever gonna change.

I want humans taking my order, cooking my food, and delivering it to me by hand.

I will only spend my money in places where this happens.
