Justice was served. I was afraid he'd get a sentence on the lenient side, which would have been a miscarriage of justice.

In most states setting a trap is illegal. He is not the first to get caught or is the boy the first to die over senseless actions.

Always hear posters on conspiracy boards talk about how they are ready to start shooting if someone intrudes on their 'land' .. they are deluded enough to think they can get away with just shooting people who 'trespass' with no consequences.. think again.

This is one reason I support the taking of a simple class to get a CCW permit. I needed to take a class to get a Utah permit to carry in multiple states and the class was actually quite enlightening about how and when to use force... your life must be in danger, or you are going to prison.

A lot of people who own firearms don't have a clue as to proper safety procedures and the like. Heck in that movie "American Sniper" when he points the gun at his wife and tells her to 'drop her drawers' ... I couldn't help remembering back at the one of the cardinal rules about never pointing a firearm at another person unless you plan to shoot them and assume all firearms are loaded...

Funny how the media tends to deliver only the side of the story that validate's their readers/ viewer's perceptions.

This case was complicated by the fact that Montana has Castle Doctrine. After all, no one forced the kid to enter.

But, since it can be clearly proven that the guy was actively setting a trap, I think he got what was coming to him.

Idiotic, I hope he has a successful appeal. An innocent man is sentenced to 70 years for killing a criminal? So wrong, especially when actual criminals that commit premeditated murder during the commission of a crime get less than 10 years.

Yeah. Do all of these people crowing that "justice was served" feel that way when someone who kills an innocent only gets 20 years?

The homeowner was wrong - very wrong - but I see the sentence as disproportionate. We don't lock anybody but serial killers up for that long, and the victim was trespassing and attempting to steal!

Same here. He overstepped his bounds somewhat. I could see a couple years for it, but not what is essentially a life sentence. Heck, community service would be fine, clean trash along I-90 for a few hours. Even Montana isn't what it was. Of course this was Missoula, commenly known as the nuttiest area in an otherwise great state. I'd like to know what the burglary rate is now vs before this event. 3-7-77
