Few did, most took the path of least resistance to survive. What's more important, the right to life or liberty. Slaves really didn't get to chose and still don't.
They didn't have a choice, because they were an investment... an asset.
Once here, they were treated better than any employee after reconstruction of the south.
They went from an asset, to a liability.

Then you see my point, they were either a slave and given life or killed and given liberty.
Unfortunately, slavery existed before the Constitution and people that benefitted from it tried to justify it with all kinds of insane arguments. Fortunately, it was abovlished by the 13th Amendment which makes it unconstitutional...as it should have been all along.

Stating the obvious, however all along they were people & not property.

Life got really tough for former slaves after reconstruction. 1000's went back to the plantations they were freed from, for food and shelter, working the fields in return.
Today you will work ¼-½ of the year in slavery to your government.
True. And even more so in the much more heavily taxed European countries. In addition to some pretty hefty income taxes, even on those with only very modest incomes, there's the VAT tax:
I constantly hear people talking about the constitution as if it was "America's Bible"
I have a question... Is slavery constitutional?
(and I'm aware of the 13th ammendment.... which is not in the constitution)
I ask this because I was reading the constitution and found this paragraph
Article 4, Section 2, Clause 3 (Fugitive Slave Clause) "No Person held to Service or Labour in one State, under the Laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in Consequence of any Law or Regulation therein, be discharged from such Service or Labour, but shall be delivered up on Claim of the Party to whom such Service or Labour may be due."
Buying someone who has been kidnapped, should never be legal.
Is stupid Constitutional? I would hope not but we have a lot of stupid in this country.
