Nice, I've worked my entire adult life, and I'm pushing 40. I don't want something for nothing. To the contrary, I don't feel like paying for nothing. You paid into SS just like I do. Why don't you opt to take it on the chin for once and voluntarily reduce your benefit (to zero) so future generations can benefit for a change?

"I know this flies in the face of everything the Me Generation stands for, but it would be a nice gesture"

And there it is! A nice gesture!!! My, my my! How thoroughly PROGRESSIVE of you! Take everything from those who were forced to pay into the plan, and give it to those who haven't. The old redistribute the wealth ploy.

Disgusting.

I'm not asking you to pay me back nothing that I haven't already paid into.

But yet you're asking me to NOT collect my money so you can have it.

How about you paying me back at least 60% of my real estate taxes that have gone towards the school system in New Jersey, since I haven't had any children in it for 15 years.

You have no idea of what you're talking about.

Your comments smack nothing more than Socialism.

Give it to those who haven't? What are you talking about? You have paid into SS and I have paid into SS. As it stands now, you'll get your benefits, but I won't get mine. I know this sounds great to you -- you haven't cared about anyone other than yourself your entire life, why start now? But this sounds bad to me. I'm suggesting that you should be the one who paid into SS your whole life and not get anything back rather than me.

The fix needed to save social security is far less draconian that what the OP has proposed. Make some tweaks to the COLA calculation to better align it with actual cost of living growth, make some adjustments to filing ages for people that are far enough away from retirement to give them time to adjust their planning, and a couple other minor adjustments is all that is needed.

It's a travesty that the politicians have not fixed this problem yet, and we all should be screaming at them on both sides of the aisle to get this dealt with. The sooner we fix it, the less impact the fix will have on those that are affected.

So get back to work WestCobb and keep paying your taxes because my wife and I will be taking the benefit that we have earned by paying into the system for our entire working lives.

Dave

I don't live in New Jersey, cam. That's a state matter.

We can say they did the right thing in their golden years.
With time, City-Data forums are becoming weirder and weirder. Can anyone explain this phenomena?
"Boomers ONCE AGAIN are asking their children... " What are you taking about??

So then get on my bandwagon and make those who don't pay into the school system make them pay their fair share and stop taking MY money that I'm still working for and don't have kids in the system.

If the system is there for me when and if I reach retirement age, great. I have no issues paying into it. What I've heard my entire life though is that I will pay for it, and it won't be there for me. You can appreciate why I don't like this, right?

Some states offer reduced real estate tax rates to seniors. Perhaps you should look into retiring to one of them. Another thought -- if you live in a good school district, your property value is higher so you are getting some benefit from paying for the local schools.
