Most Native Americans, myself included, consider the white man's meaning of assimilation to mean a total destruction of a tribe's culture, heritage and customs. This was deliberately done during the 1890s up until WWII and beyond. Native Americans were forbidden to speak their language and the policy of the American government was to "Educate the Indian out of the Red Man".
I see the same thing today with other immigrants coming to our country. How many threads have there been, in this forum alone, complaining about "Press 1 for Spanish", etc.

Well that is not what we mean.... this is not a race thing, we are talking about the english dictionary meaning of assimilation. and welcome to the year 2015. maybe you can create another thread with your "Dont forget the Natives!!!! WHITE PEOPLE ARE THE DEVIL!!" stuff.
That would be an interesting statistic: How many American Muslims would want to replace our Constitution with Sharia? That would be a good deciding factor on who should live here and who would be more compatable living in one of the wonderful countries that employs it

Here in St. Louis, I thought our muslim bosnian population was quite benign on the Islamist extremist scale - but a couple were recently arrested for supporting ISIS.

If assimilation makes you that angry, feel free to live on the reservation and work on preserving your language and culture. In fact, it's a good thing that the older generations are making an effort to preserve the tribal languages as some of the younger generation isn't that interested in doing so.
Out of curiosity, are you 100% native American Indian?
Besides, you miss the whole point of "assimilation". People who come here are expected to learn English, the language that binds us all and learn our customs. Doing so has nothing to do with giving up the old country customs and traditions. My maternal grandparents came here from Europe. They went to night school and attended classes until they could read, write and speak English fluently. They became citizens soon after that. Yet they never lost the traditions or the language of the old country.
Today, bleeding hearts see assimilation as some terrible thing, when, in fact, it is not. If you were to move to another country, you would be expected to learn the language and the local customs and adapt.
Apparently, you haven't paid a lot of attention to how Amish men and women dress. Yes, the women wear bonnets but, unlike Muslim women, they are allowed to show their hair. Amish women wear dresses but they have no problems having part of their legs exposed. They also have no problem exposing parts of their arms. In fact, when Amish go on rumspringe, the men and women both wear "English clothing".
I'd say that's a heckuva a lot better than Muslim women in burkas.
They most certainly have assimilated. They have buggies but have no problems hiring drivers to drive them places. They have no problems interacting with the "English world". While they speak PA Dutch (a dialect of German) they also read, write and speak English fluently. These days, they also own smart phones.
And unlike the Muslims they don't try and force their beliefs on others.
It was in Minneapolis I believe that Muslim cab drivers were refusing to pick up passengers who had liquor in their luggage.
And in Cleveland Muslim cab drivers refused to drive cabs advertising the Gay Games.
No other group is like this.
While the extreme Christian bible thumpers are annoying, that's where it ends.
They're not going to fly planes into a building or walk into a mall and blow themselves up like Muslims will.
And unlike the Muslims they don't try and force their beliefs on others.

This entire country is still living with the version of Christian morality that's been shoved down our throats throughout American history. These individuals are still constantly attempting to inflict their religious moral interpretations upon all of us. In fact, the most analogous behavior to those Muslim cabbies in Minneapolis and Cleveland, would be the myriad Christians who feel they can refuse service to homosexuals by hiding behind their religious beliefs.
I'm not aware of any Muslims in Minneapolis or Cleveland who have flown a plane into a building or detonated themselves in a shopping mall. Conflating unsuccessful attempts to allow one's religion to exempt them from civil rights law (see above-noted Christians), with acts of violence, is both ludicrous and incendiary.
And unlike the Muslims they don't try and force their beliefs on others.

Yup. It was in the Twin Cities where Somali Muslim cab drivers were refusing to pick up passengers who had liquor. Also, they refused to pick up people who had guide dogs.
Lately, a group of Somali Muslims in the Twin Cities were demanding that food banks give them halal food and that the halal food be kept separate from non-halal food. Talk about being ingrates!

That's some rant you've got going there. Yes, this country's culture is based on Judeo-Christian values. If you have a problem with that, then move to an Islamic theocracy.
Where do you live where Christians are shoving their religion down your throat? You do know that when someone proselytizes to you, you don't have to stand there and listen, right?
