In any case, it's close enough to instant. At that point, is the condemned's final seconds, whatever it does or does not involve, really of any concern other than to ensure it is indeed their "final" moments of life or awareness? It's probably a better end than they gave their victims.

Why complicate things? A tree and a rope worked so well for so long.

"a bullet may not always be 100% effective"

The No.1 weapon preferred by assassins is the .22 The pro's now what is best.

"and messy" Not really. Plus you could always put them in a bag with a hole for the barrel first.

Why not just use the State of Oregon suicide pill?

Almost all assisted suicides take place in the home, with at least one health-care worker present. The patient takes one of two kinds of barbiturates. Seconal costs about $125 for a lethal 10 gram dose, which comes in the form of 100 individual caplets that must be broken apart to produce about three tablespoons of powder. Nembutal comes in a more convenient liquid form. It costs more than $1,000 for a dose, though, and insurance almost never covers lethal drugs.

Life, and death, should be simple.
"You people are mean." Tell that to the victims who were NOT killed outright but, had to suffer.

"Life, and death, should be simple" This isn't utopia, sorry. life itself is NOT simple

And the victims families?

" still aware and in pain" I HOPE they are. For all the pain and suffering they caused, they should feel a bit of it.

Oh the irony. Yes, let's behead or burn people to death. Sounds like a (familiar) plan. The veil of civilization is very thin indeed.

Pretty effective, but definitely messy.
You people don't deal in reality.
I have seen many GSWs.
It isn't like the movies.
Takes a while to die.
Even head shot.
We have saved GSWs to the chest.
Bullets also like to follow their own paths.

Not every gun shot to the head is the same. Properly placed is instantaneous and bullets don't follow their own path, they go where they are aimed. Just google search thoracic triangle, someone would be dead before they could hear the sound of the gun shots.
