NPR news this morning said that an environmental group in Oregon has demanded a total moratorium on trains carrying petroleum (both crude oil and petroleum products) and alcohol, because a Federal agency has stated that there will be, on average, 10 derailments per year. This could cost billions of dollars, and potentially kill hundreds of people.
While the news article didn't say so, it is safe to assume they are also against oil and natural gas pipelines (they leak), and the transportation of such products by truck (they crash).
One has to wonder, do they own any cars or trucks? Do they own anything that is made from petrochemicals? How do they heat their homes and work places?
Perhaps it is beyond time for those people to stop and THINK! Maybe they should take a good look at their lifestyle, and consider what THEY would have to give up if ALL petroleum would suddenly disappear!
Once again, the old aphorism "Be careful what you wish for, you just might GET IT!" rears its ugly head.
Mankind is a long way from being able to do without petroleum products. Slice and dice it anyway you want, we just can not do without the stuff! Wind and solar do not come close to replacing petrochemicals!
STOP and THINK, people!
this is the problem with activists, they never stop and think about the consequences of their actions, nor do they ponder what happens after they get what they want.

Which brings up another aphorism: "The Law Of Unintended Consequences!" Which is, "Whatever action you take, the ultimate consequences will be something you did not want and did not expect!"
This relates to the plan to ship North Dakota/Bakken oil by train over the Rockies to the Columbia River in Oregon, then transfer to barges for a 200 mile trip down the river to Vancouver where an oil terminal will be constructed, and then China bound ships will travel the remaining 100 miles down the Columbia to the Pacific. Every step and transfer involves environmental risk - to sell US oil reserves to China.

And the question I have is.....whats the benefit to Oregon vs's the risk? I'm surprised Conservatives don't get behind this, screaming and frothing about states rights. Ohhh turns out that only applies when its things they like.

Just because an activist group calls for something doesn't mean it will happen. This is a great way to bring attention to something that we need to pay attention to when it comes to insuring the safety of our rail lines in the state, but not worth shutting down our rail lines for.

No, I am quite happy and enjoying myself. But I figured one of the most liberal states would have been able to deliver Scandinavian utopia by now. Conservatives, even the ones who move here, are allowed to have opinions too.
