Maybe the people that you know are totally self interested but most of the people I know are not. We have made it a priority to go out of our way to be helpful, kind and a support to those we come into contact with.

Go after the shareholders instead. Increase the capital gains tax. Eliminate corporate tax. Most of their profits go to the shareholders.

I think there needs to be a threshold on cap gains similar to a tiered system we have now with income tax.

Just what is my self interest in supporting a kid in the third world that I will never meet or know personally? There is no self interest involved. We surely can perform random feats of kindness without expecting anything for it.
