Former Sheriff Richard Mack is part of the "constitutional sheriff" movement and opposes Obamacare. He didn't sign up through the ACA website and has no insurance. He makes the absurd claim that "because they [he and wife] are self-employed, they have no medical insurance". In January 2015 he had a heart attack and last November his wife was hospitalized with serious medical issues. A GoFundMe account was launched and in 26 days has raised $17,033 for his medical bills.
The sheriff and his wife no doubt have bills totaling more than $200,000. A triple-bypass is between $40,000-$80,000. Assuming his wife has been in the hospital since mid-November that's another $115,000 or more. They were very fortunate that they fell ill during the open enrollment period. I would bet when someone from the hospital shoved that pen and paper in front of them to sign up for insurance they gladly did. What hospital would want to eat $200,000 in hospital bills
The conservative position on this should actually be that since Mack and his wife refused insurance they should not be allowed to buy insurance or should have to pay much higher rates than everyone else. Being they have no income they are probably on Medicaid...except Texas didn't expand Medicaid so that might be a problem. The bottom line on this we all pay for the stupidity of people who refuse to buy insurance because a black President signed the legislation or its the road to socialism. Sheriff Mack needs to step forward and acknowledge all the people who are paying his bills including the taxpayers.
He's in Arizona. So am I. If he ever gives a public speech and opens up the mike, I will ask him that exact question. "Who and how, did you finally end up paying your and your wife's medical bills?" If he lies about it, I'll be sure that public opinion nails his redneck ass to the wall and his political career will be finished.
Even by Arizona standards.
Yeah, and clearly has proven to be the viable solution for the entire healthcare system. We don't need no coverage; we just need charity!
You make it sound as if it isn't only a select few that cannot pay their bills.
CLUE: It is only a select few that cannot afford to pay their way in life. Not everyone.

Its only a "ridiculous" choice, if someone can prove he would have somehow gotten free insurance from ACA.. I doubt he was in that income range where he would qualify for medicaid...
.
Please, Enough senseless apologies for stupidity. He does not deserve "free" Insurance, no more than most people do. If a common laborer can afford some type of Insurance, then a "Sheriff" can afford it, regardless if he is Sheriff of PooDunk Iowa. Like the folks here say, its "Karma."
The sheriff complains about people getting subsidized Obamacare while he himself asks for and accepts
handouts for his own medical care. He calls other people mooches while being a mooch himself.
Which makes him a turd and a hypocrite.
I would be interested to hear what he has to say about his lesson. As a sheriff he has enoyed taxpayer funded health care all his life, but when he quit his job, he refused to take personal responsinility of his own coverage, and now he is begging others to pay his bill.

So, I'll ask you, do we know if he could afford insurance?

Don't know yet, but I'm working on getting some answers. There's something about the whole affair that doesn't meet the smell test. Lot's of missing pieces to R. Mack's story.

A personally resppnsible person would not quit his job if he could not afford the basics. It is strange that he would afford to launch a political campaign but not afford somethiing as basic as health insurance for himself and his wife.
