Over 300 prominent Republican lawmakers have filed an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief with the Supreme Court urging support for same-sex marriage in the court's upcoming decision.
300 Republicans File Brief with High Court in Support of Gay Marriage

Seems that at least some republicans are on the right side of history.

This is nice but I never understood these filings. As I've pointed out elsewhere, our rights are our rights and not a popularity contest. The government can't discriminate whether 90% are for or against something.

While rights are not a popularity contest, unfortunately, to a great extent, the denial of rights have throughout our history been subject to relative popularity versus unpopularity those for whom rights may be protected or denied.

Homosexual couples have had the right to marry since at least 1868, but that right has been first ignored then denied for almost 150 years. What's happening this year isn't the granting of the right to marry to homosexuals but rather the acknowledgement that that right has been unjustly denied. Why would a right be denied? First, because of the institutionalized hatred inherent in an imperfect society of imperfect human beings, and then later because popularity of the hatred for those who would have that right protected fostered enough (unjust) political power to deny that right.

Until now.

Unfortunately history does not support your belief. The court has ruled in favor of sterilizing women that weren't of certain standards. They have upheld separate but equal, and a host of other horrid decisions that have taken many decades to remove from our culture.

People today do not support my beliefs but that doesn't make it any less factual.

Because they took popularity into consideration.

Facebook, Apple among 379 to file gay marriage court brief

"Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Coca-Cola and Johnson & Johnson were among 379 companies to file a friend-of-the-court brief with the U.S. Supreme Court, pressing the high court to overturn a lower court's ruling that upheld bans on same-sex marriage in four states: Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee."

The purpose of this thread was to highlight the significance of republicans signing on to support gay marriage. It's no surprise all these companies did the same.

Unfortunately my opinion as to why the republicans are doing this is cynical but at least they're doing it.
I believe the republican leadership wants marriage equality to be a non-issue in the 2016 campaign..they don't want to lose votes over it any longer (they can see the writing is on the wall and that Americans overwhelmingly support marriage equality. It's simple math really..it will be interesting to see what part of the party....my guess the tea party, will refuse to sign onto this new republican support of gay marriage. I'm hoping for the super conservative religious right wing to fight it tooth and nail and further divide the party, hopefully resulting in many more election losses down the road

The only way it will be a non issue in the coming election is if the candidates stop spouting off on the subject, which they have proven that they are incapable of doing.

I don't think you will be disappointed in your hope. And even when it is legal in all 50 states--and it will be by the end of the summer--it will not cease to be an issue for the fundamentalist Tea Partiers. Roe v Wade didn't stop the right from continually pounding on abortion rights. If anything, it fueled their opposition. They will not give up their hatred for gays and their fervent desire to disenfranchise them no matter what the law or the Constitution says. Hatred is a powerful force, and the Tea Party has enough of it to fuel them for years to come.

But there's no doubt the more mainstream Republicans know they have been on the losing side of this issue for too long, and given the rapid level of acceptance of gay marriage, they are smart enough to know they need to be on the right side of this for the long term health of the party. Yeah, it's a position they are taking out of political expediency, but hey, at least they are finally attempting to leave the cretins of their party behind.

I wish them much success in this endeavor. The country would benefit greatly if the GOP would marginalize the Tea Party once and for all.

WTH does history have to do with this issue and why do you deem them to be on the "right" side of it?
