Why are people calling Maher's credibility into question? O'Reily has been caught red-handed(and red-faced) in half a dozen lies about the things he's reported and reported experiencing. Maher's not a journalist nor is his credibility at all relevant. This is what's called "killing the messenger."

He flip-flops his views and relies on his audience to dictate which way he is going to go. Spineless.
He's jealous so he made O'Reily tell lies for 20+ years?

FAUX news and O'Reilly defenders, nothing more, nothing less. Adding that this board is overrun with right wing conservatives. Liberal bashing is very much an in thing.
Maher tells the truth here and O'Reilly fans can't handle it.
He's not a real reporter, just like FAUX is not a real news station.
But O'Reily and Fox like to have it both ways. When their hosts make false reports or say insane crap the defense is that they're just "personalities" and "commentators." When their "personalities" are to be held accountable for the horrible crap they say then suddenly Fox only has journalists reporting the facts.

And O'Reilly isn't a journalist either. He was at one time, but now he is a commentator. People tune in to get his opinion on matters. What happened in Buenos Aires 30+ years ago really isn't relevant.
The difference between O'Reilly and Williams is three-fold, one, as stated above, O'Reilly isn't a journalist, Williams is. O'Reilly has a commentary show that on a great day reaches 3 million people; on a bad day Williams gets 8 million and it is supposed to be a straight news program. Lastly, Williams "misstatements" are current. He was telling these stories contemporaneously. O'Reilly hasn't been talking about his time in Argentina and his account is a matter of opinion. News reports at the time talked about chaos in the streets, violent anti-government protests, police firing tear gas, plastic bullets and even live ammo to disperse the crowds. The accounts do mention U.S. news crews being knocked to the ground, cars carrying news crews being attacked and more. If "war zone" was overstating it, the attacks on O'Reilly from certain sources are decidedly underplaying what was happening. It is certainly a far cry from "my helicopter was shot down."
