I read a news article (i use that term loosely) titled something like '7 ways white people are racist and don't know it'.
It was based on studies which show that people unconsciously have negative assumptions about black people even if they are otherwise consciously non racist people (even black people hold some of these unconscious racist assumptions). My initial question was, assuming these studies are accurate, what causes this? If an otherwise 'progressive' person who grew up in a non racist household can have unconscious assumptions about intelligence, ability, likelihood of relying on government benefits etc towards black people, where did they come from, how were they conditioned?
The answer is clear to me, they come from being bombarded with the studies and awareness campaigns about the gaps. Achievement gaps, wealth gaps, incarceration gaps, etc. All this information is data being fed to our pattern forming minds whether we like it or not, it comes to us constantly and it comes to us sometimes exaggerated or sensationalized to keep the funding coming to the interests which have made it their career to address these gaps. Well they come with a price, they are tarnishing the reputation of a race. These are conditioning us to equate failure with being black, these are what allow a conscientious person with all the best intentions and racial good will to unconsciously equate black to negative and white to positive. This becomes a feedback loop or vicious cycle which perpetuates the 'institutionally racist' environment where blacks keep failing (or are perceived to keep failing). My solution is simple, stop tracking race.
A lot of conservative whites think that just because they don't say nigger that they aren't being racially intolerant. That's where the problem lies. Making claims that blacks have low test scores is because they are black (genetically inferior), that is an example of being racist. saying blacks are more criminally inclined "because it's in their blood" is also being racist. Yesterday it was nigger with nappy hair and jungle monkey lips (mocking their physical features, you still find these sorts in rural areas), today it's making claims they are genetically inferior. Both are being racist, one is explicit and the other is implicit, and both are equally nasty and vile

Who today is making claims that they are genetically inferior?? I think you missed my point. The claims being made is that racism or lack of funding or whatever else is causing blacks to fail. but the unconscious mind makes more general connections whether we like it or not, it hears "blacks fail, whites succeed".

You are so far off base it is funny.
It isn't conservatives who think blacks are inferior, it is liberals. Liberals think that blacks can't get into college unless we make special provisions to let them in. They think blacks can't get jobs so they create racial quota systems. Once they are in those jobs liberals think blacks can't advance unless there are set, guaranteed advancement spots.
That is the subtle racism that goes on. Liberals who don't think blacks capable of any accomplishments so they destroy their confidence and take away chances to prove their worth.
