Not condoning the chant, but if a black student referred to a white person as a "cracker", are they expelled?
So, you are concerned about there being a double standard as opposed to a hostile environment? I do not get the relevance of your question to whether or not a public university expels a student for violating the code of conduct.

btw- this chant is heaven knows how many decades old - probably back to the 50s, and not just SAE. One would think time would change things - apparently not.
I've never heard the chant and being at work today I held off any comment until I heard it. I don't think the problem comes in with the N word. People call each other names. The problem comes in with the references to hanging someone in a tree.
I'm a huge proponent of free speech but I don't think the students are going to prevail here. There are limits and singing about hanging someone from a tree is probably going to cross that line. Also while not Universities, courts have granted schools more leeway in restricting speech in order to keep peace.

I never heard no hanging part - that is apparently something these idiots added. But the base chant is many decades old. Some of the older white guys that are expelling these students, such as Boren and other older white guys, may have sung this chant themselves back in the day - just sayin.
If I was ever to become aware that my children had demonstrated such abominable behavior, I would feel as though I had failed completely as a mother. I'm utterly disgusted.
Can we all agree to stop responding to IC as he has no interest in discussing the absurdity of his position? I mean, using his logic, non-disclosures are unconstitutional and so are gag-orders.
Sigh. non-disclosures are not a governmental controlled item.
Gag orders tend to be temporary, And are part of the 6th amendment in scope.
Neither of those apply here. You call IC's position absurd, while you try and compare non governmental non disclosures, and 6th amendment related gag orders to a completely different issue. Thats absurd for you.
On this topic InformedConsents point of view is informed, unlike yours apparently.

No kidding. I'd be ashamed of behavior like this from my children as well!

I found what is supposed to be a transcript of what they were singing. If it is not, I would reconsider.
