you still haven't told us who 'they' were, nor why hundreds of news outlets worldwide are saying that students were expelled. I guess they're all wrong?

maybe you'll believe the university president's actual words. probably not.

"I am deeply sorry for what I did Saturday night," Rice said in the statement. "It was wrong and reckless. I made a horrible mistake by joining into the singing and encouraging others to do the same. On Monday, I withdrew from the University and sadly, at this moment our family is not able to be in our home because of threatening calls as well as frightening talk on social media."

For those of you who say that this is simply free speech, this letter reinforces to me that admission and right to attend OU is a privilege, rather than a right. Right wing folk would be the first to say that driving is a privilege, not a right. This falls under the same category? PRESIDENT has right to expel them.

Do black students have a right to be on a public campus without being threatened?

They do have 1st amendment rights that have been violated, no matter how hateful the words may be.
The 1st amendment is not there to discuss the weather.

The answer is the university can get away with it as long as no one takes them to court. I suspect the students will simply find another college.
