For one thing I have never heard of the speech and secondly it is still a problem... maybe more than ever. Things are discussed until they are solved.
White folks love the speech because it was a black person complaining about black misconduct. What fun!
Eisenhower complained about the military-industruial complex in 1960 and the problem has not been solved. Not too many people are dragging out his speech today, though.
Ever see what happens if a high-profile "white folk" goes on in a public forum about black misconduct?
Sorry Manigault, there's more out there than what the likes of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Ray Nagin pontificate on and react to.
More what out there?
I remember a 'high profile' white guy complaining about black misconduct without anyone attacking him -- it was Fritz Mondale. You don't remember that?
Also, isn't it a little paternalistic to complain about the conduct of a group you don't belong to? Like me telling the Germans to stop eating all those fatty sausages and the Russians to lay off the booze? The three activists you mention also have a history of complaining about other folks misconduct as it pertains to members of their own group. So its no mystery that there is a dearth of white people complaining about black people. Do black folks in general persecute or hold down white folks?
This spending is not anything new. The black upper middle class did a lot of this "blind blind" spending in the 1920's during the gilded age. They really did not have many choices for investment other than real-estate, businesses, or cars, but this same sort of complaining happend 75 years ago when a larger black elite class emerged. Sad to see certain histories repeat itsetlf. It is heavily discussed in E. Franklin Frazier book, "Black Bourgeoisie" published in 1957.
The difference between he and Cosby is the group of blacks they went after. Cosby did not go after black people as a whole he attacked the black poor and lower middle for not pulling their weight, which he should have done. E. Franklin Frazier attacked the black middle and upper class of that day, because of silly investments and attempting to keep up with Jones's. Buying cars, large houses, and a number of items he felt were bad investments back then. It's an excellent read. Covers a lot of history from the 1800's until the 1950's. Here's a link should this book interest anyone
When certain people pull out the Cosby flash card, my first inclination is to ask:
Why do you care one way or the other?
