How can they fight for us when many of the middle class are fighting against their own self interests?

If you are talking about the jobless recovery of 02-03 thanks to the dot.com bubble, it didn't do much.
What you continually fail to understand is that you cannot help the middle-class (or the poor) by taxing the rich to death (destroying the rich).
Policies that undermine job creation (raising taxes on corporations, and the "rich") are always going to hurt the middle-class and the poor.
Businesses are started by people with investment capital. They are the job creators. Taxing business (corporate profits) at a high rate reduces business expansion. Have you ever heard the expression that "if you want less of something, tax it more?" Taxing business excessively results in less business expansion and reduces job creation.
That's why when Republicans want to stimulate the economy the usually talk about tax reduction. Democrats, on the other hand, talk about government spending with a corresponding tax increase on the job creators.

I disagree. We have a state that recently did just the opposite and the result; the best economy in the country!
