Oh noes, Obama said the dreaded word "mandatory" when referring to another country that requires everyone to vote.
Quote:
What happens if I do not vote [In Australia]?
After each election, the AEC will send a letter to all apparent non-voters requesting that they either provide a valid and sufficient reason for failing to vote or pay a $20 penalty.
If, within the time period specified on the notice, you fail to reply, cannot provide a valid and sufficient reason or decline to pay the $20 penalty, then the matter may be referred to a court. If the matter is dealt with in court and you are found guilty, you may be fined up to $170 plus court costs and a criminal conviction may be recorded against you.
If people aren't interested enough to vote, I certainly don't want to force them.
Many people are interested, but can't due to employment. Like you I would hate to make it mandatory, but I would love to see presidents day moved to a voting day.

I kind of agree with Greg_IA. America is the oldest surviving democracy for a reason. If people don't want to participate, then I'm okay with allowing them to check out. But I do wish a lot more people would vote. It would be better for the country if more people got informed and participated in elections.

This is a good idea. Make it a national holiday. It is a pain in the butt to vote after work when the lines are a mile long. That being said, I never miss an election.

LOL. In my state its easy, other states, not so much. Seriously, being against moving presidents day to a voting day is bad....why exactly?
