Lyndon Johnson knew how to crack heads and get votes. I noticed they gave a shout out to LBJ at the Selma anniversary events. He deserved it. I don't know if he was a bigot or not, most people of the time were pretty prejudicial in their thinking, but he put his country and its citizens above whatever personal biases he may have had. I often wonder if Kennedy would have been nearly as successful on civil rights issues.
Almost all of the southern "Dixiecrats" were racists and voted against civil rights at every opportunity. So, back in 1964, the northern Republicans made the difference. Shortly afterwards the GOP adopted its "Southern Strategy" and the one-time Dixiecrats became today's solid southern Republicans.
Funny how much the political landscape can change in half a century.
Yes this is standard liberal rhetoric but unfortunately for your attempts to spread lies and misinformation, the majority of today's solid southern Republicans were not of voting age during the Southern Strategy, so the propaganda that liberals try to push that the one-time Dixiecrats are today's Republicans is not only a laughable lie, but it's quite literally a physical impossibility. Nobody who isn't an aging senior citizen today was voting during the Southern Strategy era. But no doubt dishonest people such as yourself will still be pushing that tired narrative even after everyone who voted for Nixon is in a coffin six feet under.
That narrative carried some weight in 1980. But newsflash for you: it's 2015 now. As much mileage as you got from that 40 years ago, it's getting time to move on now. It no longer applies. So you'll have to come with a new lie to explain away how the Democrat party, the champions of the common man and of the poor, consistently loses the votes of the poorest states whose interests you all are supposedly deeply concerned about rather than facing the truth that your polices just don't actually help the poor.

Are you claiming that the South, back in the 1960s, was a liberal bastion?
The problem is 'labels'. Using labels cause people to use lazy thinking. The South has always been conservative. Disregard the 'democrat' or 'republican' label.
No one is arguing that those in Congress back in 1964 are still around today (at least, in power).
What are you like 20? 25? Are you really this ignorant?
It was Democrats like Al Gore, William Fulbright (Clinton's mentor) and KKK Exalted Cyclops Robert Byrd who were filibustering and blocking votes in the U.S. Senate.
A higher percent of Republicans in the House and Senate voted for the bill than Democrats. The bill never would have gotten cloture if the Republicans had not voted for cloture.
Al Gore?? Then 16 year old Al Gore was a United States Senator in 1964???
As can be seen, the Act had greater support from Republicans than Democrats. And it would not have passed without the Republicans.
*************** THREAD FAIL *******************
You know before you declare thread fail you're supposed to give an argument as to how it's failed. You haven't. All you've done is rattle off some numbers.
And using those numbers, which you absurdly claim prove the the Republicans were needed, if only the Democrats had voted it would have passed the Senate by 46 to 21 and it would have passed the House by 153 to 91. How the hell is that needing the Republicans?

Republicans didn't make any difference. They didn't change a damn thing. If only Democrats had voted it still would have passed

Oh and for the record ALL of the southern Republicans were racist and voted against the 1964 Civil Rights act. Not just most, all, 100%

Were there 67 Republicans in the Senate in 1964? (I think that was the number required at the time) No, there wasn't, which means it also would have not passed if the Democrats had not voted for cloture. It also required a Democratic Majority leader to bring up the cloture vote

Oh you do know it's 2015? The way you cons babble on about how black people should vote Republican because of the 1860's and 1964 I was kind of wondering
