The military is comprised of mostly uneducated "dregs of society" types trained to take orders and kill.
Well, that's a pretty elitist comment.
It's comments like this that make me think we need to re-institute the draft. Let's get more people like terperoni here into uniform and send them downrange. I suspect they would gain a lot more respect for the military if they were exposed to the strength of character and intestinal fortitude that it takes to serve, especially in combat.

Look man, I'll be the first to say that I don't like the way our military is being used today as the world's police force, and war for profit, but your comment is a bit over the top, and couldn't be further from the truth.

Racism has been a part of human history since time immemorial. Are you suggesting there are no racist doctors, lawyers, software engineers, artists?
What do people expect? Well, there are differences between military culture and civilian society. There are differences between combat troops and, well, everybody else. It is incredibly stupid to discriminate against somebody in the military because you depend on others to survive in combat zone. However, a little racial joke can be fun, they are going to say it anyway. get over it. Hazing can be part of the training and bonding process, get over it.

Nah...that's totally false....and very disrespectful to boot.
The military is a composite of society at large. The same percentages of people in society with varying characters and talents are found in the military in the same percentages. The military as a society isn't better or worse than the civilian society that it protects.
Why is that 50% of the threads on here are about "racism"? Why is it breaking news every time someone commits a thoughtcrime? Is anyone actually hurt by mean words? Is anyone "systematically oppressed" because people think mean things from time to time? Racism used to mean fire hoses, Jim Crow, and slavery...now it is basically schoolyard taunts and "microaggressions."
The article did say a soldier committed suicide because he was hazed about his Chinese ancestry. My gut tell me he was likely in an emotionally fragile state to begin with.
It's a shame he was hazed.
It's a shame he allowed other people's words to to define his value.
So now we have the army considering reconditioning ( fat) camps to meet quotas.
Perhaps they ought to consider Emotional Intelligence Camps, too.

Make and take no offence.
I agree with the bolded completely.
It is sad that Denny Chen (spell check) committed suicide, but hazing is a very normal part in the military. My brother went through a gold wing pinning ceremony when he became a force recon Marine. He said gold wing ceremony is part of bonding process and this is one of the proudest day of his life.
I never understand this kind of mentality, but not everybody is suitable to be a combat soldier or Marine. I guess.
