Deadly-force report cites Philly cops' poor training

PHILADELPHIA — Poor training has left Philadelphia police officers with the mistaken belief that fearing for their lives alone is justification for using deadly force, the Justice Department said Monday in a review of the city's nearly 400 officer-involved shootings since 2007.
.
.
.
Officers in the nation's fifth-largest city fatally shot 96 suspects between 2007 and 2014, including 11 in 2013.

That number fell sharply last year. Officers shot at 29 suspects and killed four of them — the fewest officer-involved deaths in the eight years for which statistics are available.

Definitely a step in the right direction... I think there needs to be far more training OF COPS all across the country.

I agree. I think it should be mandatory that when citizens get a drivers license, register to vote or turn 18 that they go through training classes on good manners and how to act civil when in public. That would also include instructions on not threatening police officers with guns, knives, fists, machetes or motor vehicles to name a few. They should also let people know that if you act like a thug you'll probably die like a thug.

If you gotta a problem with a cop take it to a real courtroom lest you lose your head over the encounter.

You agree? Funny guy. Apparently, you think fear alone is reason to shoot. Sounds quite fascist.

Yes, if your actions put me in fear of death or serious physical injury then that's reason enough for me to shoot you. And that level of fear is different for every person and will and may vary by situation.

So, now you're a police officer. Got any other good ones?

Not now. Retired after 32 years. FEAR is the key element in any self defense shooting, police or civilian.

MOST times, I side with the cops and I've had some run ins with them back in the day.

You are right. More training is needed. Shot at 29 suspects with only four deaths? Abysmal.

And fear of ones life is the only justification that's needed for deadly force. To claim otherwise is dangerous to ones own life.

How ridiculous. As if a cop faced with a split-second decision about who's going to die and who's going to go home, will decide in favor of the perp.

Thankfully, cops haven't been held to that standard so far and never will be.
