Interesting that you choose adultery as your sin of choice to compare this to. Most adulterers don't throw a catered affair for their affairs. I am willing to bet that if someone ordered a cake or flowers for their adulterous affair there are a lot of people, not just Christians who might refuse.

I bet there are also a lot of photographers who would refuse to photograph a couple (or group) having sex. Does a photographer have a right to refuse that work? If so, on what basis?

Can you recite for me the words from the Indiana law that "codify bigotry"

Yeah because not baking a cake for a wedding is exactly like sawing off someone's head.

Bigotry in the name of religion is still bigotry.

One of the problems of this law is that it is overly broad and allows business owners to discriminate against anyone if it goes against "their sincerely held religious beliefs." (How can 'sincerity' be proved in a court of law anyway?)

People here who are trying to defend the law are citing the one or two cases out west where a baker and a florist violated the local non-discrimination laws by refusing to serve a gay customer. These problems never arose in Indiana. The law in Indiana does not mention bakers or florists ... look it up and read the law. This law was poorly crafted and once it goes into effect a hotel can refuse accommodations to LGBT folks (or Jews or Buddhists or Hindus or any other group that goes against their religious beliefs), any shop or restaurant or business providing services to the public will now have a license to discriminate.

I think Seacove makes a valid point: if you, as a business owner, are going to discriminate then own up to it. Put a sign on your door that says "No Jews, Gays, or Dogs Allowed."

Of course if Gov. Pence and his Republican colleagues were clever they would have drafted a law that was worded more clearly and defensible, one stating something like "in the interests of protecting business owners from endorsing, engaging in, or celebrating holidays or events that are contrary to their religious beliefs, goods and services may be restricted to the place of business." In other words, if a gay couple comes into the shop to buy decorations for the wedding party, fine; but the party planners do not have to decorate the venue with groom-groom or bride-bride decorations."

But whatever. They voted for him so...(shrug).
Exactly. And what I don't understand is how ANYONE can claim that their God says discriminating against anyone else is the way they should live their lives. After all, their very own Bible says we should love our neighbors. Isn't it convenient that their God always rejects the same people these "religious" people do

You still cant deny someone service because of their skin color, religious beliefs, or sexually in indiana. You can deny doing a service that promotes ideas you dont believe in under this law. Those are 2 different things. Example: gay couple wants to get married a florist doesnt believe in gay marrage can tell them they wont make thier florial arrangement for the wedding. But they cant say we wont service you at all because you are gay. That is against federal law. In otherwords deny a event is ok, deny for all service regardless is against the law. If that gay person who got married comes back in and wants flowers for a funeral the business must sell them flowers. Unless said business owners religious beliefs are against all funerals. That would be very bad business practices for a florist.
Maybe you can point out where "event" is even mentioned in the law. I can't seem to find that part.

Discrimination against gays are not illegal according to federal law, but discrimination based on religion, and race are.

Your tired comment works for AM radio, but not in reality. You can't call "Christians" who spew hate getting called out as "liberal spewing hate"

BTW, the "Christian" right movement is not Christian. Christians believe in Christ and the Gospel. American conservative policies almost always are counter to that. However liberal policies are more aligned with the teachings of Christ and the Gospel.

I hope businesses shun Indiana. People need to know that electing bigoted conservatives like Mike Pence to public office has very serious consequences.

The Final Four is being played in Indianapolis, and they are still planning on playing there, but I think they will make a statement to the effect they don't agree with their bigotry.

Also, I've long heard that Indiana was the heart of the KKK in the Midwest for many years, so this state has a legacy that would support their latest bigotry.
