Everytime I think Rand Paul doesn't have a shot at becoming President something like this happens. If the people of Seattle want the government to wipe their bottoms, that's fine. I'm all in favor of local dictates because they voted for the city government they wanted. Seriously. I think they should have what they want because if you don't like it, you can move. But when the EPA is thinking of glomming on to it for all of us, enough's enough. No one elected them.
They don't like the idea that you are throwing away food. They want you to sort it out of your garbage.
"In an attempt to shame residents of their city, a new Seattle law will levy a fine on homes that do not properly sort food out of their garbage. "The ultimate goal of the law is to boost composting while reducing greenhouse gasses..."
The guy who makes money off of it and enforces it is all for it.

I think it a good idea. This is not a nanny state situation. The municipality is trying to get a hold on it's waste processes and composting is an important part of that situation.
The government doesn't gives a crap what your throwing away just that you put it in the right container for processing.
I'd bag up all my garbage and then sneak out in the middle of the night to put it in some apartment complex dumpster.
Not all food is good for composting.
BUT Wait...
Isn't "composting" the piling of organic waste until it decomposes?
Doesn't decomposing organic waste generate methane gas?
Isn't methane gas a "greenhouse gas"?
"The ultimate goal of the law is to boost composting while reducing greenhouse gasses..."
But...But...won't increased composting INCREASE greenhouse gas emissions?

I told my husband the same thing And I actually compost.
People in Seattle actually compost, this law isn't that big of a deal for them. Though it will crack down on apartment building owners to provide composting.

Many in the PNW - me among them - would be embarrassed to put food in the garbage. Sign of a bad housekeeper, if you ask me, every bit as much as, say, piles of dirty laundry being stored on the floor.

Funny how people outside of the northwest think this is being a nanny state, when in actuality it is just a way of life for us that they don't understand.
There was a brief county pilot program in a close by neighborhood that provided SF homeowners with a special pail for meat/dairy waste. Participation was voluntary. Interestingly, most people did make use of the pails in this very Republican community.
The pilot was discontinued due to county budget cuts.
Seems to me most people in Seattle favor the segregation of compost waste and are willing to pay for it.
None of my business.
