www.kansascity.com | 01/15/2008 | Federal commission seeks up to 40 cent-a-gallon increase in gas tax (broken link)
The gas tax has not been raised since 1993, and revenue has not kept up with every increasing expenses for road construction, maintenance, and transit.
Although raising the tax will be costly for everyone, I like it when bridges don't collapse while I am driving over them. Additionally, the tax should encourage fuel efficiency and transit use, which will cut our reliance on foreign oil.
BULL SH*T!!!, you can pay for roads with user fees and toll booths, we need to be going after all the oil we have in our own country and reduce the gas tax!!! Pretty hard for your milk bread eggs and toilet paper to ride the bus, what do you think happens to the price of all those things ???
There are many, many people who do not want to be within walking distance to schools, shops, parks etc - and that is the point some of us are making. There are millions of people who want to get away from the congestion when they go home - away from the noise - the crowds - the traffic. They don't want tree lined sidewalks with lots of people walking by -
...but you don't need "congestion" to have this. You can live in a nice small town of 5,000 or so and be within walking distance of schools, offices, banks, a movie theater, parks, grocery stores, etc.

Unfortunately you won't have a job and will be homeless living next to an alleyway that is close to malls and theater and learn panhandling skills... this is very realistic you know... please...

I don't think you get his point. Some people want a ranch with 5,000 acres where you can see the stars at night. Some want to live in a town, others in a suburb, and others in a city. Different strokes for different folks.

Fine, don't want to increase the gas tax? Put toll booths on EVERY SINGLE road and highway. One way or another, roads and highways need to be paid for. Our expressways don't magically get built and repaired for free.

That's fine. But if you want to live far from it all, and still be able to commute to your job in the city, you should be willing to pay for the highway that you use to drive to work. Either increase the gas tax or put a toll booth on the road.

What are you talking about? There are plenty of white-collar professionals with Lexuses in some of these small towns near me.
Oh yeah, thats what most people do in the U.S. Most people in the U.S. hold white-collar jobs... white collar jobs are opening everywhere, especially in remote isolated towns... its that what you mean by being realistic?
Where I live, the federal fuel tax is 6% of the price (18c on $3.00) Less than the sales tax on other purchases.
