The US military has been involved in quelling internal disturbances since the Whisky Rebellion. Id rather they be properly trained in riot control and less than lethal methods of force rather than have to resort to bayonets and live ammo like in the 1960s civil disturbances, and the student revolts at Kent State in 1970 and the University of Puerto Rico in 1971.

This is the age of fourth generation warfare, wars are now fought between organized armies and guerrilla groups and insurgencies (ahem Ukraine anyone). Local security operations are the new norm in warfighting.

Right, this is a problem because riots only happen inside this country and never in other countries where our military may be stationed. Of course!

If this is the case and I doubt it, I'm comfortable that you're not in that majority...

Yep; then it avoids the lack of training suits. Everything as to be covered in this suit happy nation. Remember they were used in new Orleans and people there lined streets to cheer them when they left . as they did want them to go.

By the same token the U.S. as police state isn't a new thing either; both developed in the same time frame.

Non-Lethal Weapons Program

I would much rather deal with the Military, during any major Civil Unrest, than to deal with a Private Contractors Mercenary Army of trained Veteran foreign Killers who have been granted police powers and use of deadly force. These people would be a major threat.

Did the same thing in the early 70s, so your point is they should not be ready for riot control? Being ready is the job of the military.
