I`ve read the Constitution, but I don`t recall seeing anything about women being prohibited from voting.
Since there seems to be no language in the Constitution preventing women from voting, I can`t agree with the reasoning the Supreme Court used in 1875 to rationalize that women had no Constitutional right to vote.
Seems like they were very much making it up as they went along.
Of course the Court of that era appears to have been dead set against anyone except white males having rights as they declared unconstitutional the Sumner (R) civil rights act in 1883, so they may have simply decided the voting rights case before they even heard it.
As for individuals misinterpreting the Bible, what any person believes to be the meaning of any religious text is a religious matter protected by both the Free Exercise and Establishment Clauses.
There is no official government sanctioned interpretation of religious doctrines, so there is no government standard by which a religious text might be misinterpreted.
Perhaps the people working so hard to make the military their own little social engineering laboratory could put together a course on the Constitution that focuses on how a Supreme Court that has assumed the power of judicial review has used that unconstitutional power, and without any support from our founding documents, to deprive blacks and women of rights belonging to the people.
...sure am glad our soldiers are spending time sorting out the origins of sexism. This could have unintended consequences and they may start targeting men and women equally.
The Defense Department approved a “sexism course,” demonstrating how the Bible, the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence all contribute to modern sexism.
Alright. I've read through all three pages of this thread, including all your one liners. What's your point? What's your current grievance? What do you want to do about it? What do you want done about it? Let's cut to the chase, shall we?
I`m sure we all agree that women have the right to vote and always should have, but what I don`t understand is the Constitution being blamed for the denial of voting rights to women when there simply is no such language in the text.
Minor V. Happersett was clearly the female Dred Scott, but wrongful interpretations of the Constitution by the Supreme Court cannot be blamed on the Constitution.
The adherents of one of those annoying documents, the Bible, led the fight for women's suffrage. Hint, their name starts with a "C" and references a person who was crucified and resurrected.
Why were women not allowed to vote before 1910? Were they not guaranteed their right to vote in the Constitution, or was the Constitution not followed?
Several points must be considered in the context of that time, and NOT measured by today's standards.
The first point is that originally, only wealthy land owning MEN were given the right to vote, because they represented the only demographic that were educated and consequently understood the complexities of political philosophies. Women and commoners were not so educated, nor were they interested in such things. Sadly, and however politically incorrect it may be to say, look at the fine mess we have now with criminals running the country and everyone voting for whoever BS artist has the slicker tongue. As it stands right now, 3/4 of those that actually go to the polls today, are little more than participating in a popularity contest, having not the faintest clue about the pertinent issues and the positions of those they vote for. Those that actually possess the intellect to cast an educated vote, don't bother to do so anymore, because they're outnumbered 50 to 1 by the mouth breathers.
These men that crafted the constitution were a product of monarchial rule in which nobody had the right to vote, as the monarch ruled by selected bloodline. So the very nature of our constitutional government was unique for the times, and while one can find flaws, show me something crafted by today's so called statesmen and political leaders that can even come close to the wisdom demonstrated in this brief document that has served the nation well for over 200 years .... when it's been followed. You'll find NOTHING remotely close.
Forget about the issue of women voting ... the vast majority of voters today of both genders shouldn't be trusted with electing a local dog catcher, much less, selecting the nation's leadership. As harsh as that may sound, I cite the sad state of affairs we see from the District of Criminals as supporting that declaration.

We need to learn history so that we can learn from it and not makes the same mistakes. Teach that class!

Do you think voting should be only for those with college degrees?

7 year of Obama has made liberals and far left nut jobs pretty bold and brazen in their contempt for Western Civilization, the Constitution and Declaration of Independence, and really the United States in general. Those on the right have been saying for years that leftists hate the Constitution and here they are outright admitting it these days! They're feeling pretty drunk on power right now but times change.
