Well, obviously (along with Affleck) Henry Louis Gates, the producers at PBS, and Sony all had a problem with it. You know, the people who make the show.
I have a very liberal friend find out recently that his family figured prominently in The Crusades 1000 years ago. He was clearly upset at the discovery. Liberals can be such tools when it comes to this type of stuff.
Me? I'm descended from Irish horse thieves and the pirate Jean Lafitte, I think it's hilarious. Of course, I am not a liberal so I guess that helps.
I understand. But I think sometimes celebrities have to pay a price for just being famous. (don't think it is fair to them)
My grandpa always told me "Don't Air your dirty laundry in public." I think he is right about that.
This has nothing to do with what your grandfather told you. This is about doing a story on ancestry and leaving out something pertinent. For the record, my great-grandfather helped Gen. Sherman burn down Atlanta during the Civil War. I think it's cool that he was there.

Because he didn't want it in the show. Why isn't Reality TV actually reality? Keeping Up With The Kardashians is a heavily edited show, just like this ancestry show is.

But he wanted to do the show, until he didn't want to. I guess it was still done, they just talked about more "interesting" people in his family than the slaveowner. What a whitewash!
Most of us would be happy to cut him some slack re: his ancestors- that's beyond his control.
Pressuring PBS to hide factual information that he finds embarrassing is not.
well, it doesn't bother me that he wanted to hide that from the public. There is no punishment, only consequences. He's going to take responsibilities of his own actions. I think he made a poor choice, that is it.

And? All TV shows get edited to tell a story they all want you to view. How is this any different from your favorite shows? Not really something worth this kind of "outrage," though when news is slow, people gotta be mad about something.
Bottom line is that if my ancestors owned white slaves, I too would not see it as something to share beneficially with the public, as I would not be proud. Mr. Affleck is an actor and as long as he does a good job, his ancestors lives mean nothing to me. Sure we can learn from the past, but only if the subject and context are relevant to what we deal with currently.
