Let me add this - there are several posts / threads about the need to "tax the rich". Or, the "rich" are greedy etc
Hence, my question
Well you are quite right in the fact that it is subjective. I look at it in the same manner in which the Supreme Court defined pornography, "I cannot define it precisely, but I know it when I see it".

Excellent Point!!!!
Question: Do you consider Oprah Winfrey (sp?) rich?
Question: Do you think Oprah considers Bill Gates rich?
Rich is something the other people want to exploit like a natural resource.. they figure they can take take and take some more and nobody would be angry... Don't steal from me, the government doesn't like competition...
"Rich" is anyone in the 51st percentile or greater.
"Poor" is anyone in the 49th percentile or lower.
Middle is anyone in the 50th percentile.
I'm actually going to refine my own answer.
Rich: Any adult whose income from all sources puts them in the 51st percentile or greater.
Poor: Any adult whose income from all sources puts them in the 49th percentile or lower
Middle: Any adult whose total income from all sources puts them in the 50th percentile. OR, an adult who doesn't care how their income compares to anyone else's.

Think about it
Oprah doesn't think, she feels (kidding)
Well as you point out, it is a good bit of perspective. I doubt I would be considered rich by many but considering where I started out in life, I consider my station in life vastly improved.
Trying to quantify subjective definitions can drive a person to madness, so I leave it up to the individual to determine what it means to them. Much in the same way I view religious things, like trying to quantify who or what God is.

Excellent points - and, IMO, very true.
Hence my problem when people start to "bash" a particular group - RICH or POOR - they are bashing, again IMO, a very subjective definition and as such, to me at least, the rants tend to be very unfair
I've been looking back in my archives for an article I got YEARS ago on these types of definitions - haven't found it yet (dang!) but essentially it was a study by some Grad students at MIT - in their study they asserted that people will define another as being "rich" if their incomes were 30% + of their own. I remember thinking at the time it sounded .... "reasonable" enough -
Gotta try to find it
