Make no mistake, thug is the new code word for N***er. Do all the dancing around you want about how it's ok to use it, but that doesn't change the facts.
I've NEVER heard the word THUG used to describe white criminals (or criminals of any other race; Hispanic or otherwise). NEVER. No, not once. Not when they are armed robbers, rapists, mass murders or even, gasp!, rioters. Or worst of all, an idiot who assaults or kills a police officer. Only when the offender is black.
THUG has replaced the "N" word as the PC word to use instead of the N word. It's pathetic that people are defending the use of it seemingly they way people used to defend the use of the N word by saying poor white people behave like N's too so it's ok to use the N word. It seems a lot of people are trying a bit too hard to justify the use of thug and are more than happy to have a new word to use that they can say OUT LOUD, IN PUBLIC to replace the N word. By adopting yet another racist term you are perpetuating yet another stereotype to pass on to your children. Congrats!
#KnowTheCode: In moments like these, "thug" is a racially coded word, a post-racial substitute for the overt monikers of black people from yesteryear. "Thug" has transformed into a pejorative word that perpetuates stereotypes of inherent black criminality. The problem isn't who uses the word per se, but the message it sends to others.
If thug was used for all criminals, it would be used to describe police officers that break the law too wouldn't it? Has it been used to describe wife killer Drew Peterson? Or alleged OJ Simpson framer, Mark Fuhrman? Uh, no. I could add more, but you get the idea.
Hiding behind the word THUG shuts down any chance of the conversation the same way the "N" word did before it.
Don't you think for 1 second that part of this has been brought on by some black people themselves? Thug life? Rappers and artists glorify this. Before rappers started using thug that way it wasnt a racial word.
One could quote an untold number of articles, books, and other forms of media over decades and decades in which criminals other than blacks have been referred to as thugs.
It wouldn't make a lick of difference. Race baiters will still assign a cutesy-protesty hashtag to it and build a finger-pointing narrative around it that excludes any coverage of the specific acts of lawlessness that constitute one being referred to as a thug in the first place.
If we ban the use of the word thug, what word will we have to replace it with? And when that word begins to have negative connotations as well, will it also have to be banned? Even supposedly innocuous words eventually get a negative connotation when applied to a negative thing. The media's preferred code word is "youths", for example, and that word has sort of become a running joke.
Yet with the Baltimore riots we heard both the President and the Mayor of Baltimore refer to them as "thugs" although the Mayor apologized to them afterwards.
Yes, because we know that Blacks can be racist too. If you are black, middle-to-upper class & wealthy, you are not going to relate to a poor "Ghetto" black kid therefore they are thugs.
If black people in power positions (like the president and the Mayor of Baltimore) use the word THUG to describe their own young people, they have given the green light for everyone to use the word. Bad move.
IMO this also helps explain how black police can rough up black offenders.
People who believe "thug" is the new N-word are basically saying that black people are the main group of people committing thuggery.
The true racism is the "outraged" people who can't seem to separate actions from race.
Thugs are people who commit acts of thuggery.
If you think "thug" and immediately relate it to black people, you're the racist.
I saw a whole lot of thuggery in Baltimore committed by thugs who happened to be mostly black.
I see a lot of Russian videos of white people being thugs as well. I see videos of rednecks in Alabama being thugs. I see videos of Japanese young men engaging in acts of thuggery.
If anybody wants to be upset about the term "thug" being put on blacks, they need to target their anger at rappers and such who embraced "the thug life" in their vernacular trying to make it a cool black thing.
I get what you're saying, but seriously, should we blame grunge and hard rock/metal artists for the trench-coat-wearing lunatics going on shootout rampages and/or doing acts in the name of the devil? Much like rappers, these artists are, simply, artists.
The rapper singing about "thug life" is no different than Marilyn Manson singing about suicide and drugs. Eminem has never killed anyone. He's actually apparently a rather upstanding citizen. Tupac, who coined "thug life," wasn't much of a "thug" at all. They are all simply that: artists.
If an individual wants to embrace what a singer says in a song as a way of life, the blame rests on said individual and whoever failed to raise them properly. (I do recall both Eminem and Manson saying exactly that as well.)
Don't you think for 1 second that part of this has been brought on by some black people themselves? Thug life? Rappers and artists glorify this. Before rappers started using thug that way it wasnt a racial word.
I won't disagree that the use of the word by rappers glorified it, made it cool and acceptable. But blacks also use the "N" word to talk to each other and it is acceptable for them, but certainly would not be for someone who is not black to use (IMO). I don't think because they use it that it makes it okay for whites to use it or the word THUG. I find both terms disrespectful and offensive.
But as with everything here, these are personal opinions, not the opinions of the management.

You say it like the POTUS or Mayor were the first to ever use the word thug lol
People were using the word thug to describe a badly behaving individual long before some people starting crying foul because its the new n word lol
