Clearly there are reasons so many people wanta higher minimum wage. Why don't conservatives address the underlying issues?
We have a real world experiment currently playing out as the minimum wage just increased to $11 on its way to $15 in the city of Seattle.

Let's wait and see how this increase in labor cost/wages affects jobs, if any. Results should be apparent fairly soon. Personally, I think fewer humans will be employed as minimum wages are raised, but we will see.

That is what keeps bringing me back, 5 pages in and all the responses from conservatives are the responses I was expecting. Conservatives believe businesses should be allowed to pay employees, as long as it isn't them, as little as those businesses like because working a minimum wage job means that you have no skills or motivation and therefore you do not deserve to make enough money to afford shelter and food.

Seattle's unemployment rate currently sits at 4.4%.

- It makes companies raise prices to contend with higher labor costs, which hurts everyone
- It increases the pool of potential applicants for certain jobs, pitting more skilled applicants against entry-level workers
- It reduces the number of jobs, as employers learn to do more with fewer workers.
- It incentivizes companies to invest in automation and kiosks, which will eliminate more low-paying jobs.

Do I want people to languish in poverty and low-paying jobs? Of course, not. The thing is, bumping up the minimum wage every so often encourages people to stay in those low-paying jobs rather than serving to better themselves. By increasing the minimum wage, we're telling people to stay in those dead-end jobs.

Everything the Democrats propose to help poor people seems to just trap people in poverty. The poverty rate has not budged in 50 years despite all the programs and money that's supposed to fight poverty. The things we do to fight it end up creating more poverty. We should be focusing on training and educating these workers instead of just giving them a pay increase to stay in the same dead-end jobs they're already working.
Then to listen to you, sodrop the minimum wage to, say, $5.00 an hour and then stand back and see if that causes job creation and the economy to skyrocket?

Obama actually gave a great speech concerning this, back before he lost his freaking mind.

Here's a few snippets from it:

Obama, NAACP, August 2009:

"Today, we view race through the eyes of politics, and in particular, political parties.

The dream that Dr. King talked about, in that most glorious of all speeches on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, is one that we should not forget.

Today, 46 years after his eloquent speech, we can freely vote, work and live wherever we want, marry regardless of race, receive preferential treatment when it comes to admission to colleges and universities, and obtain preferences in federal and state contracts and hiring to remedy past discrimination. Today, there are over 87 means-tested welfare programs for those most in need.

All told, the federal government has spent over 22 trillion dollars on welfare-related programs since 1964. A vast portion of that money has gone to us — to black Americans.

Taxpayers, through Congress, have spent hundreds of billions of dollars just for affordable housing in the inner city, including for Section 8 housing. Yet when I visit Cabrini Green, or any other Section 8 housing complex, I see decrepit buildings, gangs, and addicts. People who, despite public housing, food stamps, WIC, the availability of school vouchers, and dozens of other benefits, refuse to live a responsible and moral lifestyle. Dr. King would be ashamed at what one part of our community has done to itself in the last 46 years.

far too many of our brothers and sisters have failed — yes, failed — to take responsibility for their own lives. Too many young men and women in our inner cities do not reach for the stars and strive to make a better life for themselves or their families. Instead, they reach for a joint, a gun, or a knife. The consequences are devastating."

School kids will actually be able to find jobs then.

I remember as a kid, my mother would pull into a gas station and four teens would rush over, check the oil, tires, wipers, and fuel the car, and teenage ushers would help people find a their seat in the theater. Now we don't bother to offer those types of services at all, or we spend tens of thousands , or hundreds of thousands of dollars in an attempt to automate those jobs.

you do realize that the min wage is already set by the states....why should the FEDERAL government be setting the 'national' wage...is the cost of living the same in NYC as it is in bumfrack Mississippi????

FEDERAL min wage should be zero....let the LOCAL governements and regions set the min wage for that area...based on the COL....

oh..but there would go bye-bye to the liberal boogeyman of cons are against the min wage

cons are NOT against the min wage...they are against a STUPID federal min wage

why cant liberals figure out one size does not fit all

Isn't that mostly for SEATAC, with a longer timetable and different rates for other areas?

The minimum wage law I was referring to, and linked, was for the city of Seattle. Minimum Wage Ordinance | SOCR - CivilRights | seattle.gov

Seatac's minimum wage was set at $15 last year, I believe.
