I saw the linked article on Yahoo news about the starving people on boats turned away from Malaysia:

Malaysia turns away boats as death stalks weary migrants

I wondered what American Officials would do if something like this happened closer to our shores. What if instead of 600 Migrants there was tens of thousands in countless boats sitting 15 miles from Virginia Beach from a place like Haiti or Africa, abandoned by smugglers wanting to come to America?

IF we let them in, of course the word would get out and even more would follow.

While the human side of me says let them come in, the practical side says no. What if thousands of the word's poor, streaming into America by boat, were resettled into your hometown and moved into camps right next to your home and their kids would be sent your kids schools? Would your human side be as flexible then?

I am from Miami and we had 125,000 Cubans arrive in Florida during the Mariel boat lift and thousands of Haitians arriving on rickety boats. One of the most incredible moments for me was seeing a boat full of Haitians wash up on Rickenbacker causeway (Google map it) and we we were stuck in traffic and they started asking for rides! We picked up 2 men and other drivers also were giving them rides as well.
Refugees from Haiti & Cuba has made Miami a unique city.

There are plenty of people in this country are starving, majority of these people are children. Many are struggling financially. We cannot afford amnesty for illegal immigrants. It is not a racial issue, it is an economical issue.

Our national debt right now is $18 trillion dollars, we are paying INTEREST for it. We also spend, spend, and spend more. As a country, $600 billion more than we earn through tax revenue, which is the ONLY way this country generates income, it seems like.

Will you buy stuff you cannot afford? I hope the answer is a no.

Many say this country is a country of immigrants, it used to be. It is obviously, that, Immigration, once thought of as a social or economic phenomenon, is increasingly being viewed by many nations as a security concern.

I think Navy and coast guard, even Marines have trained for traditional military conflict should be patrolling national boards or sea lanes as part of campaigns to halt or manage illegal immigration and refugee flows

Give these poor starving people a free hot meal, some medical treatment, then send them home.

Maybe I should not have used Miami as an example because of the history of Cubans and Haitians. (I just changed the question.) What if geography was different and we had the same type of refugees come by boat that Italy is facing and they showed up by the tens of thousands in a place like Charleston or Virginia Beach, would they be welcomed knowing that if the first 10,000 were accepted with open arms, another 100,000 would follow.

Open arms?

I won't welcome anybody who enter my own house without permission with open arms. Treat your country as your home. Please.

Indeed.

Cubans and Hatians from late 70's- early 90's.

Geneva Convention prevents a return to homelands when immigrants can present a reasonable business case that they would face persecution.

If I recall, Castro took the opportunity to empty the prisons and insane asylums.
Those with money entered on tourist visas and then promptly went to work creating anchor babies.

There is only one thing to do and that's to have Homeland Security bus them into California!

DHS CAUGHT BUSING IN ILLEGAL SOMALIS FROM MEXICAN BORDER
Immigration official: 'Asylum' is the new password

Exactly what California needs; 30 million more uneducated farm workers!

PS Life is so easy being a liberal I don't even have to think.

Same thing would happen as in Miami..the USCG would pick them up and bring them ashore.
