Take Ted Cruz, who is now the darling of tea partiers and ultraconservatives. He said "I respect Barack Obama" and that he is "deeply principled." The notion you describe exists in your head, and your head only.
As for James Taylor's opinions about guitars, chord changes, or how to tune a guitar, I'm fine. When it comes to politics, I could care less what Mr. Taylor thinks.
The same holds true for the opinion setters that C-D folks like to point out. Folks like Ted Nugent although I have to say I wouldn't care for either Mr. Nugent's musical opinions or his political ones for that matter.
