July 4th is Independence Day...I have never heard of it referred to as Veterans Day #2.
Maybe it's cause I'm in Colorado Springs, military town of the nation, but 4th of July always seems to have strong influences of respect and commemorate the armed forces, where it almost seems like veterans day #2. But I don't know why we can't have Veterans Day and Memorial be the same day. All served, some died, and some did not, but the honor and respect goes to the same cause.

I think Memorial day means different things to different people.

I personally lost two childhood friends in combat (Operation Iraqi Freedom), I don't think I can ever really get "over" one friend's suicide. Your heart would break into millions of pieces if you believed you could save somebody, but failed miserably.

Several family members of mine are Korean era Or Vietnam era veterans, wars, have never been part of our daily conversation.

Well, I've used my own money to pay for one friend's custody battle. I let him using my own attorney and my attorney offered a discount price. Many have told me I was an idiot, but I was doing it for myself, not for anybody else. He's a veteran, he is a wonderful father and is suffering. By doing it for him, part of my heart is healing. That is all. To me, it is never about you vs me, them vs us. It is about you honor those made the ultimate sacrifices for a good cause, and you help those who are still here with us before it is too late.

That being said, I do not know a single veteran who expects the country to mark this holiday with 24 hours of uninterrupted sadness. So normally we out to the bar, drink, and have a good time.

Rememberance is but a single thought.

Default The Meaning of Memorial Day

This memorial day weekend will be a sad one for me.

An old buddy passed away earlier in the week, the victim of a cancerous tumor. Since he wasn't a smoker, the suspicion is that it was result of his exposure to agent orange during his two tours in Nam.

RIP Lee...

The Confederates were protecting freedom, at least.

That is how I understand it as well.
