My stepfather was black. The difference in how he was treated vs me was surreal.
Driving along, cop lights show up, he pulls over.
Cop sits behind us. parked.
15 minutes go by. Cop does not approach.
stepfather figuring that obviously he isn't being pulled over drives on. Gets car started, cop turns on the sirens, pulls him over 5 feet later. Arrests him for attempting to elude, and resisting arrest (he didn't).
This sort of thing happened about 3-4 times. He owned a restaurant, and was a law abiding citizen. After 6 months he was facing multiple charges, and the chief of police ate at his restaurant. So he went and talked to him. The camera tapes were pulled, the cop in question had his rights to drive home in his police vehicle removed, and was assigned the oldest POS vehicle for the next 2 years. All the charges were dropped.
There were only 2 black families in my city growing up. Heres the thing, he could have just as easily ended up in jail were it not for that chief. Even so....think about this, this guy almost falsely imprisoned someone because of their skin color, and his only punishment was a old cop car. And we were grateful.
Stuffs pretty messed up out there in places, some places are better then others, some worse.
