Congress wants a pay raise - CNNPolitics.com

Because $174k isn't enough money to do nothing, apparently.

And they have been reduced to sleeping in their offices, since apartments are too expensive...

When an employer doesn't have the funds necessary to boost pay, employees see wages and benefits slashed. The bozos in congress aught be working for free, judging by the nation's ballooning debt.

Personally, I wish these criminals would go on strike. It would be a step in the right direction for this nation, and probably would restore confidence around the globe.

It is true that the cost of living in the DC area is ridiculous, with 500-600 sq. foot efficiency apartments going for $2000+/month, and two bedroom, 1200 sq foot townhouses and condos going for $550-750K. Congress has chosen to minimize the OPM cost of living adjustment for D.C. area government workers by including the Baltimore, Maryland market (2-3 hours away during rush hour) in the D.C. market calculation.

The staff assistants making $35k (in DC?!) could probably use a raise, but not another penny for these con artists. Ask your corporate cronies to slip more cash in your bribe envelopes so you can afford a hotel room.

If you can't live off 174 grand a year ( while doing nothing) there something seriously wrong with you. And these people also have a job for life (despite doing nothing all day). How can they complain?
Just give me ONE year of that salary and I could take the next 5 years off

Members have set office budgets, which they allocate for official government business as they see fit. House members have total office budgets of $1.3 million to $1.9 million, with an average of $1.4 million, and Senators have budgets of $3.0 to $4.7 million depending on their state population and distance from D.C. Congressional members can hire a bunch of folks for $20-30K a year or fewer people for $50-100K per year.

No, one member, who has lots of legal bills because he's corrupt, demands a pay increase.

If only they did "nothing", they'd be worth every cent.

They should make as much as the average American makes.

but as a thought experiment, how quickly would congress raise the federal minimum wage if that's how much they got paid?
