I've been thinking about this, and I do have to say, the backlash this is getting is probably higher for his stance on gay rights. I kinda feel like it's unfair. What he did was wrong, but I think had someone else done this, people wouldn't care so much.

I've also been a hypocrite. I had initially condemned him, but I also have advocated that criminals deserve a second chance. Not extending that same courtesy to him would be hypocritical, and frankly, I do believe him when he says he no longer has any desires to do what he did. We can say he's lying, but that's pure speculation and we shouldn't condemn someone on a speculation.

I still disagree fully with his political views, but his past shouldn't be everyone's business.

Being in a union doesn't make someone a liberal. Not everyone is black and white about everything.

They would shock their penis with electricity, to "train" them not to get excited. It did not work for long.... I think this show was on NOVA....(long time ago) .

I only find "one cure" for a molester (death) because they often re-offend. The psychological damage is horrendous to the kids...I know two friends who's dad did to them...very sad....
In general, the public is poorly informed about sex offenders. Recidivism is lower than what the general public thinks and treatment has had some promising results, and the treatment available get better as we move forward.

Many sex offenders are actually convicted of a crime they committed in their teens. Teens can have hormonal imbalanced which can cause them to sexually abuse people. I think that was Duggard's case. The combination of teenage hormones and extreme repression from his fundamentalist parents is likely what lead him to do what he did. This probably means he's basically harmless now.

By the way, he has 3 kids, with one more on the way.

I am amazed at the hatred spewed against this family, which, like every other family, is not perfect.

How many of you had no problem with Bill Clinton's behavior? Do you think he only started molesting and raping women as an adult? Do you seriously believe he never molested a young girl as a teen? Your delusional. But, his behavior was unimportant, It was inconsequential.
I know you haven't been given much to work with, but... "In my head, Bill Clinton did something equally bad" is really the best you can do?

Keep these hateful breeders off the air. Hypocrites for sure. I'm getting so suspicious of most of these "good Christians" with their hateful cherry picking of bible verses to support their hate.
We're the cops called? Maybe they were also friends of the family so they kept it a secret to preserve their Duggars paycheck on TV.

I'm a hypocrite? I am not the one preaching about the sins of others while hiding my own. I am not the one claiming that "they" (LGBT people) will molest your children while hiding a molester in my home. I am not the one claiming to be holier than everyone else while hiding the molestation of my own children.

As for your god, prove it exists.

What goes on behind closed doors in the homes of many alleged "Christians" is usually enough to make genuinely moral people feel ill.

I remember Michelle Bachman's husband, the guy who would "pray away the gay" (that was his job, he 'cured' gay people), well, that guy is as gay as the day is long. Many of today's alleged "Christians" are using religion as a way to earn a paycheck or as a cover for their crimes against humanity.

Anyone who has 19 children and acts like it is an accomplishment really needs psychological counseling, as do a good many so-called "Christians"

Uh, you would be the one constantly criticizing the speck in other people's eyes, while ignoring the log in your own. Your holier-than-thou attitude here is not doing a service to your beliefs. You're not going to win people over with hatred and condemnation. How about you start following the commands of Jesus, and then we'll care about what you say?

Years ago, in college, I took a first year writing seminar on reality tv (all the classes were whacky and off the wall - it was to learn to write research papers at a college level using pop culture and other "hooks" to make it interesting) and did my final paper on the Duggars. Due to this paper, I frequented the now defunct forum Television Without Pity (really focused on dissecting popular TLC shows at the time) and Free Jinger (forum that functions as a Quiverful watch group but also discusses the Duggars). There were rumors even in 2007 about this, which, at the time, I felt were too far-fetched to believe and simply the result of looking for trouble.

Gawkwer dug up two of the posts originating the rumors: The Web Has Known About Josh Duggar for Years. When Did TLC Find Out? (note: this article has the best timeline of the events that I have seen)

From 2005:
Quote:
...A few years ago ... the men of the church were meeting after church to discuss my friends teenage daughters apparel. They felt like their blouses were to tight and they should bind their chest up more, go figure. At the same time the son of one of these political men was touching one of my friends teenage daughters in a sexual way as she slept. This was found out and apologies were made although the boy was tempted by the girls tight blouses(lol). The boy was sent to one of the training centers to be punished??? My friends did not return to the home church for quite sometime after this. At this same time, the boy mentioned earlier was betrothed to a girl in the the group, both were 14 at the time. The betrothal was broken by the boys actions. ... Just this last year the family of the young man mentioned before was highlighted on the Discovery Channel, at the time they had 14 children and were about to have another and the mom was receiving a mother of the year award from our governor. Since that time the same boy was betrothed again to the same girl. He was working very hard on a campaingn for U.S. Senate for the girls father. The father lost the campaign. He immediately began looking for “sin in the camp”, as that could be the only explanation for the loss. He found that the young man betrothed to his daughter, had committed sexual sins(?) while on the campaign trail. The young man, now 16, was made to stand in fornt of the church and confess his sin. He was then told that the campaign was lost due to his sin. The weight of the world on this poor boys shoulders. I do not know what punishment the church gave but I do know that it was harsh enough for his mother to seek advise outside of the “group”, but she did eventually give in to her husband and the group. The young man and young girls betrothal is now broken. I am I nuts to see this as abuse? And what do you think can be done?
(it seems that the church knew about one victim, but not his sisters)

In 2007:
Quote:
Let me tell you something about the precious Duggars that you don’t know. ... In January, the whole family went to Chicago and taped Oprah Winfrey show. Oprah wined and dined them for one week. You know that had to cost some pretty pennies. As you may have noticed, that show never aired and it never will. Oprah was informed that Josh, the oldest son, had been molesting his sisters. Yes, this is the truth. Oprah turned them over to the Arkansas State Police Child Protection Agency and the Washington County Child Protection Agency. They have been investigated to some length. Jim Bob Duggar told the producers of the show that he built a small church out back for his followers. HIS FOLLOWERS. GET REAL. THE MAN IS A FRAUD. In April, they were in court with their story. They have to report to Arkansas Department of Human Services every six months.. They have lied and lied about their son to protect him at their daughters expense. For some unknown reason the boy is still in the home with the girls. God only know if this is still going on. In my eyes he is a CHILD MOLESTOR. HE SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE HOME. What kind of parents cover up for one child and hurt the others. I do not believe that this is what God has in mind for them. Frauding the American people and taking their money and living off of it.They did not build their home by themselves. They hired it done. TheDiscovery Health Channel and the TLC channel wrote them a check for over $200,000. for the to build the house. Everything inside the house was given to them except the kitchen. They did buy that themselves. The rest is all free. ...

God’s honest truth that the molestation happened. It happened to four of his 5 sisters. The oldest daughter was not touched. The second daughter is the one who caught him doing this. There was no rape involved, but molested. I could go into detail, but I won’t. Of course, you can find nothing about the charges. The Duggar’s want to keep this hid. Wouldn’t you?”
(though it seems like we know that the CPS part was not true - or was it and we just don't know?)

So this tells me that a whole heck of a lot of people knew about this. There is no way that TLC did not know, and they put them on the air anyway.

If you read through the police reports and the statements from everyone involved, the parents took this very seriously. I can't imagine having one of my children harm another one. The police reports say that the Duggars did multiple things, including taking him to the church elders (who also should have reported to the police), turning him into the trooper, and when the police came to them in 2006, they admitted he had molested the girls and encouraged the victims to all tell the police the truth. The police asked each victim if their parents tried to influence what they said, and every one of them said no, that their parents told them to tell the truth.
The girls also all said that Josh had not done anything else wrong after coming back from Little Rock (where the parents sent him after the molestations) and that they felt safe around him.

I don't know why anyone ever wants to be on a reality show, and I especially don't know why someone would go on a show with such skeletans in their closets. I've never watched the show, but I've seen the family on the news a few times and never got the impression that they were calling themselves perfect. In general, Christianity is an admission that everyone is a sinner.

I've been appalled with the outright gleeful reactions I've seen from some liberals on Facebook and in story comments. I don't understand how anyone can be gleeful about this story.
Those girls should never have had to be around him again. Do you really believe they felt safe? What are the parents thinking! Parent's may no be able to imagine their kids doing this but it happens - more often than you'd think. These poor victims were scared and they had to go home with these people. There is a good chance that they said what they'd been told to say. Scared and intimidated. I say this as a woman who was molested as a small child by the older children of the women who ran the day care center I went to (in Nashville in the early 1960s). I was terrified. Too scared to tell my mom. Woke up screaming at night. My mom got to talking to some of the other parents and it turned out their kids were acting strange too. But none of us kids talked - we were young and very scared (no, it didn't happen just to me but I was the youngest girl). Our molesters, these older kids both boys and girls, threatened us, said they'd hurt our parents. I remember my last day there - even knowing it was my last day, I was terrified. It messed me up for life. Trauma like that you never truly heal from - especially when you're so young. It's sick beyond words.
