To me, one of the most telling things about this election is that people are traveling home to vote in it. Whether a particular voter's priority is defying the church or extending civil rights, either way it is obvious this is something they feel deeply about.
And BTW, does anyone really think that a person deeply opposed to SSM would still support this vote just to spite the church?
You are right this was not a protest vote against the church, the church is not the moral authority it once was say 20 years ago in this country. Family has always been very important in Ireland and for a lot of people didn't want to live in a society where family members, friends, neighbors and collegues are not/ are potentialy not equal.

No, it has nothing to do by being controlled by the far left, it is instead a cultural shift due in large part to a young and well educated electorate.
Even Fianna Fail, (an Irish conservative party) said, "it's simply wrong in the 21st century to oppress people because of their sexuality".
In short, it was a victory of humane citizenship and societal empathy.

They said we were possessed and mentally ill and threw us in prisons and insane asylums and tortured us. They banished us from our churches, our communities, and our very own families. Many of us remained invisible, others bravely chose to live openly, and some simply gave up. They said we had an agenda but all we asked was to be equal, not better, not special, but equal, to be respected as human beings. We are not an organization, we are not a race, we are not a culture, we are not a religion, we are not a political system, we do not have one lifestyle, we do not have one world view, we are individuals unique and diverse. We have a right to be equal, we have a right to love, we have a right to life. IT IS OUR TURN!"

Perhaps, if the Duggars of this world would stop trying to keep them second-rank and use them as scapegoats for every ill, they could become just folks like the rest of us? Seems worth a try, no?

Gay rights has nothing to do with being far left. And in most other developed countries, even conservative parties support gay rights. Even though many conservatives in those countries might be homophobic, they realize it is inevitable and that it makes no sense to fight against it since most of their country are for it or are at least indifferent.
Irish people will vote for anything that has a parade , There a little backwards , except the gay irish man said on TV last he voted against it as he believes a child should have a "real" mother and father .
