"If the measure is passed, Catholic churches will continue to decide for themselves whether to solemnize a marriage."
^^^Guess the Catholic church is just going to keep getting smaller and smaller - serves them right though
with all the trash in their closet.
According to someone I know who lives in Cork, a lot of people are using this as a vote against the church as they are sick and tired of them interfering in every aspect of their lives.
From what I read, the attitude of many in the country was like the old joke you used to hear in the US: "If they want to be miserable like the rest of us, let them be."
When Canada legalized same sex marriage a dozen years ago it wasn't such a big deal because Canada was considered a liberal country. Ireland is considered the most conservative country in the European Union. In fact Ireland was the last country in Europe to legalize divorce, and that was accomplished in less than 20 years ago. As noted by the OP 84% of the population is identified as Roman Catholic ... and the Catholic Church launched a huge campaign against it both in the churches and in the media.
If there was ever an indication that the Roman Catholic Church lost influence and stature ... this is it. At least half of the countries with Catholic majorities - Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, Argentina, Uruguay, France, Brazil, etc. have legalized same sex marriage.
Good. I support the nuptials; I just have a profound disagreement over whether the US Constitution requires them.
